Utica 13, Alfred 5 - Empire 8 Men's Lacrosse Final
Utica, NY (4/6/2013) – The Utica College men's lacrosse team jumped out to a 10-2 lead at halftime and never looked back as the Pioneers topped visiting Alfred University, 13-5, in Empire 8 Conference action on the turf at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium Saturday. The Pioneers, winners of three in a row for the first time this season including two in the Empire 8, improved to 6-3 overall and 2-1 in conference play. Freshman Trent Jacobs (Hogansburg, NY/Brewster Academy) netted a career-high four goals, while senior Ben Winkler (Rodman, NY/IHC) chipped in with three goals and two assists for Utica.

UC's Joe Schoen (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) totaled four points on three assists and one goal, while senior Justin Edelstein (Hartsdale, NY/Harvey School) added two goals and one assist. Schoen extended his team-lead in assists to 18 after recording a helper on three first half goals. Utica has now won eight of the last ten meetings against Alfred and improved to 8-6 all-time against the Saxons.
Alfred (6-3, 0-3 E8) was led by two goals and one assist from Ben Demarco, while Caleb McGraig added three assists to give him a team-best 23 this year.
UC freshman goalie Trey Adams (Hogansburg, NY/Brewster Academy) stopped 13 shots on the day and sophomore Zack Stevenson (Elbridge, NY/Jordan-Elbridge) won 14-of-18 face-offs to go along with a game-high ten ground balls. Stevenson also chipped in with one assist.
The Pioneers controlled possession by winning 15-of-21 face-offs total and UC also won the ground ball battle, 45-29. Defender Dan Duffy (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) scooped up five ground balls and added two caused turnovers for Utica.
Utica dominated play in the first half to set the tone for the contest. The Pioneers netted the first two goals of the game, including the opener from junior transfer Adam Zielenski (Holland Patent, NY/MVCC) (1st as a Pioneer) and one from Jacobs, to take a 2-0 lead just 4:06 into the contest. Alfred struck back with a goal in the ninth minute, but the Pioneers countered with two more before the end of the first to take a 4-1 lead into the second quarter.
The second quarter proved to be all UC as the Pioneers outscored the visitors 6-1 in the 15 minute stretch. After two goals each from Winkler and Jacobs, and one a piece from Edelstein and Scott Baron (Flemington, NJ/Cushing Academy), the Pioneers held an eight goal lead at the halftime intermission, 10-2.
Each team netted three second half goals and the Pioneers eventually came away with the 13-5 victory.
Both teams netted four man-up goals (12 man-up opportunities each) and the Pioneers outshot the visitors 45-31 on the afternoon.
TJ Benson (Central Square, NY/Paul V. Moore) netted a first half goal for Utica, while Sean Flanagan (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro) and Baron each picked up four ground balls.
Alfred goalie Justin Becker stopped 11 shots in relief of starter Cody O'Connor.
Utica returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to Houghton College for a non-conference affair at 5 p.m.
