Utica College vs. Elmira

The Game Story:
UTICA, NY—The Utica College men’s lacrosse team snapped a three game losing streak and defeated visiting Elmira College 16-7 on senior day Saturday afternoon at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium.

With the win, the Pioneers improve to 4-9 overall and 2-4 in Empire 8 conference play, while the Soaring Eagles dropped to 2-8 overall and 1-4 in conference play. UC has defeated Elmira in two out of their last three meetings and the Pioneers avenged last year’s 12-7 loss at Elmira College on Apr. 7, 2007.

EC got on the scoreboard first on an unassisted goal by midfielder Dan Frost (Bow, NH/Bow) with 11:13 to go in the first quarter. The Pioneers scored five unanswered goals, two by senior attack Dave Misiaszek (Whitesboro/Whitesboro), to give UC a 5-1 lead heading into the second quarter.

Elmira Senior attack Mike Szpiech (Hamilton, ONT/Albany Academy) scored at the 12:38 mark of the second quarter to cut Utica’s lead to 5-2. Junior midfielder Tom Collins (West Genesee/Camillus) scored his second goal of the game with nine seconds remaining in the second quarter to give Utica a 6-2 lead at the half. The Pioneers out shot Elmira 25-10 in the first half and cleared the ball successfully 11-of- 13 tries.

Freshman midfielder Ryan Schmidt (Whitesboro/Whitesboro) found the back of the net, his 14th of the season, for the Pioneers at the 10:50 mark of the third quarter to give Utica a 7-2 lead. Elmira netted their first goal of the second half on a goal by senior attack Sean Slater (Ashland/Ashland, MA), at the 9:11 mark of the third quarter, to cut the Utica lead to 7-3. Collins scored his third unassisted goal of the contest at the 4:39 mark to give Utica an 8-3 lead. Corey Boulio (IHC/Carthage) scored unassisted at the 1:37 mark to give the Pioneers their largest lead of the game at 9-3.

UC scored first to begin the fourth quarter when sophomore attack Tanner Stewart (Lowville/Lowville) found the back of the net, his 21st goal of the season, to give the Pioneers a 10-3 lead with 10:48 left in the contest. Utica outscored Elmira 6-4 the rest of the way as they cruised to a 16-7 win.

On the game the Pioneers out shot Elmira 48-32 and scooped 30 ground balls to Elmira’s 26. Misiaszek led the Pioneers in the final home game of his career with four goals and one assist. The senior captain has scored a team-high 24 goals on the season. Collins also netted four goals and had one assist for the Pioneers while Boulio scored three goals and had one assist. On defense, senior midfielder Josh Turner (Potsdam/Potsdam) collected a team-high four ground balls. Senior goalkeeper Paul Phelan (Liverpool/Liverpool) posted 12 save performance in his second win of the season, while Anthony Carnevale (Mynderse Academy/Seneca Falls) stopped two shots in the fourth quarter for UC.

Midfielders Phil Hill (Syracuse/Corcoran) and Frost led Elmira with two goals a-piece while goalkeeper Geoffrey Lane (Pennington, NJ/Pennington) recorded 15 saves.

UC returns to action on Wednesday against host RIT in Empire 8 Conference action. The contest is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
