| The Pioneer men’s lacrosse team opened the 2005 season with a 15-7 win over the Dutchmen of Union College on Wednesday afternoon at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium. Utica fell behind early, trailing 2-0 after the first quarter, but rallied with eight second-quarter goals, including seven unanswered, to close out the half with an 8-3 lead. The Pioneers would go on to allow only four third-quarter Dutchmen goals for the entire second half, while netting three goals and four goals of their own in the third and fourth quarters, respectively. Senior Pete Masterpole (Bishop Ludden/Syracuse) scored five goals and distributed an assist, and junior Andrew Singer (Scotia-Glenville/Scotia) contributed four goals and an assist to pace the Pioneer offensive attack. Senior Matt Donaldson (General Brown/Dexter) and sophomore Steve Schoen (Whitesboro/Whitesboro) tallied three points each on a goal a two assists apiece, while senior Julian Alteri (IHC/Watertown) finished with a goal and an assist for two points on the afternoon. The Pioneers, who outshot the opposition by a 52-25 margin for the game, also received goals from junior Kevin Whiting (Queensbury/Queensbury), junior Rob Meyer (Connetquot/Bohemia), and sophomore Ryan McGowan (Northport/Northport). Junior Blake Bernard (Whitesboro/Marcy) dominated the face-off opportunities, securing 16-of-24 opportunities. Bernard also gathered a game-high 13 ground balls for the contest.
