|HOBOKEN, NJ (March 21, 2009) - The Utica College men's lacrosse team trailed 3-1 at half but failed to keep the score close as they dropped a 12-4 decision to host Stevens in the first Empire 8 match up of the season for the Pioneers on Saturday. Four different Pioneers netted a goal in the contest.|
With the loss the Pioneers dropped to 2-3 overall and 0-1 in conference play. Utica is now 0-2 in two meetings all-time against the Ducks. Stevens improved to 4-3 overall and 1-0 in the conference on the year after Saturday's victory.
In the first quarter the Ducks were in control throughout and took an early 3-0 lead. Matt Keating scored the first goal after a pass from Eric Smith. Freshman Cal Case and senior J.R. Oreskovich each tallied a goal in the first period.
Late in the second quarter junior standout Corey Boulio netted the first goal of the game for the Pioneers, tallying his team-high 16th goal of the season. UC came out of halftime fired up when captain Tom Collins scored his sixth goal of the season 32 seconds into the third quarter cutting the Ducks lead to 3-2.
Stevens caught fire during the third quarter scoring four goals in 3:03 to give the Ducks a 7-2 advantage. Sophomore Chris Laurita scored his 14th goal of the season off a pass from J.R. Oreskovich to start the scoring spree. Midfielder Cal Case and Oreskovich followed with unassisted scores before junior attackman James Napolitano scored the fourth goal of the quarter off a pass from Oreskovich.
Junior Andrew Waite put out the fire for the Pioneers scoring an unassisted goal with 6:39 left in the third. Kevin Conway scored the final goal for UC off a pass from Michael Schepis. The Ducks tallied two more goals to finish the game with an eight-goal lead.
UC senior goalie Travis Wright stopped 22 shots in his third loss of the season while Dave Decker made six saves in net for Stevens.
Stevens won 17 of the 19 face-offs and was able to pick up 40 ground balls. UC freshman Dennis Timmons led the team with four ground balls and caused two turnovers.
The Pioneers return to action Wednesday when they take on visiting Wells College for a non-conference contest on the turf at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium. The contest is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
