The Game Story:
POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (February 28, 2009) -- In a defensive battle that saw both goaltenders make several impressive saves to keep the contest close, Manhattanville College defeated the Vassar men’s lacrosse team 4-3 in the season opening game for both teams played at chilly Weinberg Field. The Valiants broke a 3-3 tie in fourth, getting the game winning tally from freshman midfielder Joe Daly (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) with 10:04 remaining.

The Brewers (0-1), who outshot Manhattanville 33-23 and held a 33-23 advantage on groundballs, look to even their record next Saturday, March 7, hosting Keuka College at Weinberg Field. Manhattanville (1-0, 0-0) next plays at Kean College on March 4.

Daly’s goal, which came early in the fourth period to leave the Brewers within striking distance, was the only goal of the stanza, but it wasn’t the only scoring opportunity. The Valiants nearly increased their lead a minute later when senior midfielder Vinny Menzenski (Yorktown, NY/Yorktown) rocketed a shot off the post.

On the opposite end Manhattanville junior goaltender Andrew Predun (Cold Spring Harbor, NY/Cold Spring Harbor), who saved Vassar freshman attack Jack Gross (Yarmouth, ME/Yarmouth) earlier in the period, then distinguished himself, making a fantastic save on Brewer sophomore midfielder Ryan Hart (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown West) with 3:05 remaining to play after an extended period of Vassar offensive threats.

The Brewers had a golden opportunity to tie the game with 15 seconds remaining when junior midfielder Nick Cardillo (Honeoye Falls, NY/McQuaid Jesuit) beat three players and got off a good shot on goal, but Predun made a stellar save.

The teams traded goals early in the third period, with three scores occurring in barely over two minutes. Daly assisted Manhattanville junior attack Joey Hasbrouck (Wantagh, NY/Kellenberg Memorial) with 12:35 remaining, and Vassar answered immediately through junior attack Sean Murray (Wyckoff, NJ/Deerfield Academy). Manhattanville again tied the game with 10:14 to play on a goal by sophomore attack Mike Strauss (Newark, DE/Wilmington, DE).

Looking to start its season on a high note, Vassar came out strong in the first period, jumping out to a 2-0 lead after just over five minutes. With 13:40 remaining, Cardillo found sophomore attack Sam Thypin-Bermeo (Princeton, NJ/Hun School) for a wide-open shot on the far post. Gross increased to 2-0 at 9:52 with an unassisted goal, and Cardillo could have made it 3-0, when his shot deflected off the post midway through the period.

Vassar sophomore goaltender Alex Tice (Oakland, CA/St. Ignatius Prep) came up big late in first period. With 2:25 remaining, he made an outstanding save up high on Daly attack. Then he stopped the Manhattanville’s Strauss in the final second of the period.
