Vassar vs. Manhattanville
April 22, 2007
The Game Story:
POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 22, 2007) -- Freshman attack Cody Scandore (North Andover, MA/North Andover) scored 34 seconds into the second overtime to propel Vassar’s men's lacrosse team to a thrilling 10-9 overtime win over Manhattanville College on Sunday afternoon at Prentiss Field. The victory helped the Brewers (2-12) snap a five game losing streak, while the Valiants (1-8) dropped their second straight contest.

Scandore's goal, which was assisted by sophomore midfielder Ross MacKenzie (Hewlett, NY/Lynbrook) followed a failed clear by Manhattanville in the early stages of the second overtime. Scandore's goal, his second of the game and team tying 13th of the season, jutted into the right side of the goal past freshman tender Andrew Predun (Cold Spring Harbor, NY/Cold Spring Harbor) who had a sensational afternoon with 20 saves on the afternoon.

After an uneventful first overtime in which both teams’ cautious play and intent to control tempo resulted in turnovers for both teams, the game winning goal came quickly in the second overtime and largely before any flow had materialized.

The game reached its first overtime at 9-9 when Manhattanville's junior attack Luke Dorfman (Freeport, NY/Freeport) scored his second goal of the game at 7:55 in the fourth period, lifting a quick shot past Vassar freshman goalie Ed Pappo (Malvern, PA/Conestoga). For the game, Pappo made nine saves.

In a game that featured nine ties and lead changes, the two teams combined to reel off 78 shots, 48 coming from the Brewers in a season-best effort. Predun's play kept Manhattanville in the game, despite no team ever gaining more than a one-goal advantage at any time.

Manhattanville led 5-4 after the first two periods. The second two periods were full of end-to-end action, sudden twists and momentum turns.

Vassar's senior midfielder Steve Cataldo (West Islip, NY/West Islip), scored back to back goals, two of his three total, within a four minute span to start the third quarter, pushing Vassar ahead 6-5. Manhattanville’s freshman midfielder Dan Jewell (Ronkonkoma, NY/National Sports Academy) answered 40 seconds after Cataldo's goal to even the score 6-6. A Vassar goal by junior attack Tristin Jemiolo (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) swayed the game 7-6, but Manhattanville answered again, its second straight game-tying goal within a minute of a Vassar tally.

Freshman attack Joe Hasbrouck (Wantagh, NY/Kellenberg) scored just 20 seconds later (to close the third period) the first of his first of back-to-back goals to push the Valiants back ahead 8-7. Of the game's next four goals, two by Vassar and two by Manhattanville, three different players got into the act, with Vassar's Scandore scoring his first goal of the game at 11:59 in the fourth period to tie the game 8-8.

Vassar's ninth goal, courtesy of junior midfielder Joe Mueller (Raleigh, NC/Cardinal Gibbons) put the Brewers up 9-8 and seemingly in command, but Dorfman was able to sway the momentum with Manhattanville's ninth goal of the game.

Manhattaville's sophomore attack Shannon Sturz (Pound Ridge, NY/Fox Lane) had three goals and three assists, notching two of his tallies in the first eight minutes of the game. Vassar's freshman midfielder Nick Cardillo (Honeoye Falls, NY/McQuaid Jesuit) had a career-high three assists for the Brewers, who scored double figures goals for the second time this season.

Vassar will conclude the 2007 season with an away contest next Saturday, April 28 against Liberty League opponent Hamilton College.
