Vassar vs. Saint Lawrence

The Game Story:
POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (March 29, 2008) -- The Vassar menís lacrosse team was barraged by 14 straight St. Lawrence goals, and ten different Saints found the net as St. Lawrence defeated the Brewers in 19-2 in Liberty League action. Todayís victory opened the conference schedule for the Saints, who move to 2-2, 1-0 on the season, while the Brewers fall to 2-7, 0-2.

Vassar will look to reverse its fortunes with a 2:00 pm game against Oberlin on Sunday, March 30 at Prentiss Field.

For the Saints, junior attack Peter Carroll (Pennington, NJ/Hopewell Valley Central) led all scorers with four goals and three assists, while senior Kevin Russell (Madison, CT/Fairfield Prep) and sophomore Will McKee (Old Greenwich, CT/The Gunnery School) each added a hat trick for St. Lawrence.

The Brewers controlled the ball off the opening face-off, and despite a pair of St. Lawrence goals early in the first quarter, looked evenly matched. Vassar got on the scoreboard with 9:45 to play in the first when freshman Sam Thypin-Bermeo (Princeton, NJ/Hun School) tallied his 6th goal of the season, assisted by senior Tristan Jemiolo (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington).

After the Vassar goal, St. Lawrence took control of the game, and never surrendered it, scoring two more times in the first quarter. The Saints only mustered one goal until 1:48 remaining in the second quarter, when Kyle Benton (Brasher Falls, NY/St. Lawrence Central) scored, and then followed it up with his second goal 44 seconds later. Saint Lawrence scored two more in the final minute to bring the score to 9-1 at the half.

St. Lawrence thoroughly dominated the Brewers in the third quarter, scoring seven unanswered goals, while holding the Brewers without a shot or a face-off win.

Vassar opened the final frame energized, with a face-off victory, a shot on goal, and a pair of ground balls, before Vassarís Jemiolo found the back of the net with his 8th goal of the season, assisted by Cody Scandore (North Andover, MA/North Andover), who leads the Brewers in goals and assists.

For Vassar, Ed Pappo (Malvern, PA/Conestoga) had 15 saves before being replaced late in the 3rd quarter by freshman Alex Tice (Oakland, CA/St. Ignatius Prep), who had three saves. St. Lawrence goalie Thomas Hollingsworth (Wilton, CT/Wilton) made four saves before giving way to Frank Maguire (Darien, CT/Darien) in the 4th quarter.
