The Game Story:
SCHENECTADY, NY – The Union College men’s lacrosse team snapped a three-game losing streak as the Dutchmen handed Vassar College a 15-1 defeat at Bailey Field Wednesday evening. Freshman Scott Garibaldi (Summit, NJ/ Summit) led 15 Union players with points on a pair of goals and two assists in the Dutchmen’s first Liberty League win of the season.

Union (4-7, 1-3 Liberty League) took a 5-0 lead in the first quarter on goals by Garibaldi and a pair by Bill Condon (West Hartford, CT/ Conard), who has picked up at least one point in 12 straight games, dating back to last season. Condon assisted on a Chris Jacobson (Northborough, MA/ St. John’s) tally with 4:34 left in the opening frame before Jon Miller (Yarmouth, ME/ Yarmouth) capped the quarter’s scoring with 35 seconds left to play.

The Brewers (1-12, 0-5 Liberty League) had a chance to get on the scoreboard with 1:35 left to play in the first quarter when Mike Littlefield (Floral Park, NY/ Floral Park) sent a low shot toward Union keeper Rob Oram (New Canaan, CT/ New Canaan), but Oram scooped up the ball to end the threat.

Vassar converted on its first possession of the second quarter after Littlefield won the opening faceoff. Tristan Jemiolo (Poughkeepsie, NY/ Arlington) fed Steve Cataldo West Islip, NY/ West Islip) for the Brewers’ only tally of the game, and Cataldo’s fourth of the season, just 48 seconds into the second frame.

The Dutchmen rattled off five more goals in the opening half on freshman Albert Blanchard’s (Larchmont, NY/ Lawrenceville School) first career goal, and the first two of Andrew Higgins’ (Wrentham, MA/ Berkshire School) career. Matt Douglas (New York, NY/ The Hotchkiss School) added one of Union’s two man-up goals with 2:16 left in the half before Chris Collison (Trumbull, CT/ Trumbull) picked up his first of two on the night.

Vassar looked to strike again late in the first half as Vito Cataldo (West Islip, NY/ West Islip) sent a high, point-blank shot at Oram. The Union netminder made the save, but then lost track of the ball, which meandered about the goal line, but did not have a chance to cross as Oram swept up the ball.

Marc Magee (Madison, CT/ Daniel Hand) opened the second half with his first goal of the season to extend Union’s lead to 13-1. Collison followed with his second goal of the evening as the Brewers outshot the Dutchmen, 9-3 in the third quarter. Union goaltender Christopher Keinath (Wilbraham, MA/ Minnechaug Regional) made four saves in the frame.

Chip Miller (Rye, NY/ Rye) and Ben Weiner (Andover, MA/ Phillips Andover Academy) registered their first career goals early in the final quarter, and Garibaldi capped the scoring with a man-up goal at 13:10.

Vassar freshman goaltender Ed Pappo (Malvern, PA/ Conestoga) made 12 saves in the loss. Freshman Rahde Franke (Harwood, MD/ Mercersburg Academy) played the final 15 minutes for the Dutchmen.

With the win, Union extends its unbeaten streak against the Brewers to eight, dating back to the two teams’ first meeting in the 1999 season. The Dutchmen are back in action in a 1 p.m. Liberty League contest against St. Lawrence on Sunday, April 22 at Bailey Field.
