The loss snapped a nine-game home winning streak for the Mustangs (6-1) who lost at home for just the second time in 19 games at Mustang Stadium. Meanwhile, the Jumbos (2-2) posted their second one-goal victory in the series after posting a 14-13 win at Towson University's Unitas Stadium on Mar. 23, 2011. Tufts leads the all-time series, 2-1. Schoenhut's goal gave the Jumbos a 7-5 advantage with 4:39 remaining in the fourth quarter before senior Peter Green (Hereford, Md./Hereford) scored off an assist from junior Glen Tompkins (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) with 1:31 left. Tufts won the ensuing faceoff before a turnover with 37 seconds to play gave Stevenson one last opportunity to tie the game and force overtime. However, with 10 seconds remaining, senior Nick Rossi (Lutherville, Md./Towson) was stripped of the ball trying to split a double team at midfield and the Jumbos escaped with the one goal victory. The Mustangs were limited by 24 turnovers and have committed 50 over the last two games after totaling a season-high 26 in Saturday's 19-3 victory at Elizabethtown in their Commonwealth Conference opener. Stevenson, whose defense forced 29 turnovers which led to five of the team's six goals, is averaging 19.4 turnovers this season, ranking the team 78th out 203 teams in Division III. The game featured five ties and four lead changes and a stretch of 29:15 without a goal from midway through the second until the 7:42 mark of the fourth quarter. It also marked the first time this year that the Mustangs did not win the faceoff battle as Tufts won 11 compared to just six for Stevenson. Rossi led the Mustangs with three assists while sophomore Mark Pannenton (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna) had two goals. Tompkins added one goal and one assist. Freshman Dimitri Pecunes (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) made 12 saves for Stevenson who is now 2-5 in one-goal games over the last four seasons. Beau Wood led the Jumbos with two goals and one assist while Andrew Fiamengo also scored twice. Peter Bowers had one goal and one assist. Stevenson hosts in-state rival Hood on Saturday at Mustang Stadium beginning at 7:00 p.m. |
