|OWINGS MILLS, MD -- Visiting Washington College scored five unanswered goals in a span of 25:27 en route to a 6-4 victory over host Villa Julie College in non-conference men's lacrosse action Wednesday afternoon in Owings Mills, MD. The Shoremen improved to 7-0 overall with the win, while the Mustangs fell to 2-4.|
The Mustangs Matt Miller scored the first goal of the game with 7:42 left in the first period off an assist from Andy Bishop Woelfel. Bishop-Woelfel then scored an extra-man goal with 5:05 remaining in the first period off an assist from Matthew Healy, giving Villa Julie a 2-0 lead heading into the second period.
Washington College senior attackman Sam Lane (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield) opened the second-quarter scoring with his 14th goal of the season off an assist from junior midfielder Andrew Ostrusky (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park/Bridgton, ME) with 9:35 left in the period, cutting the Villa Julie lead to 2-1. The Mustangs extended their lead to 3-1 on an extra-man goal from Greg Furstman off an assist from Brooks Beatty with 7:06 left in the second period. Washington College narrowed the Villa Julie lead back down to one goal at 3-2 at the break, as Ostrusky scored the Shoremen's first extra-man goal of the game with 1:03 left in the first half off an assist from freshman attack Jimmy Kielek (Baltimore, MD/Archbishop Curley).
Washington College carried the momentum into the second half, as the Shoremen held Villa Julie scoreless over the next 23:58 while scoring four more unanswered goals in the third and fourth quarters.
Ostrusky opened up the scoring in second half with his second goal of the game 1:44 into the third quarter off an assist from freshman midfielder Casey O'Connor (Crownsville, MD/Archbishop Spalding), nodding the score at 3-3. Lane followed up with a extra-man goal, his second of the game, off an assist from junior attackman Kevin Nolan (Clark, NJ/A.L. Johnson) with 5:21 left in the third quarter, giving the Shoremen their first lead of the game at 4-3. Washington extended its lead to 5-3 with :28 seconds left in the third period with the game-winning goal scored by senior midfielder Ryan Morrison (Manhasset, NY/Salisbury Schl. (CT). off an assist from Nolan.
Junior midfielder Mike Hughes (Pasadena, MD/Mt. St. Joseph) gave the Shoremen a 6-3 lead with 11:04 left in the fourth quarter before Bishop-Woelfel ended Villa Julie's scoring drought with 6:02 left in the fourth quarter, cutting the Washington lead to 6-4. WC would run out the clock to hold on for the 6-4 victory.
Senior goalie Kevin Thibadeau (Cheshire, CT/Avon Old Farms) made 14 saves in the win for the Shoremen, including seven in the third quarter. Jason Woodford made 11 saves for the Mustangs.
Villa Julie held a 33-27 advantage in shots and a 24-17 edge in ground balls in the game. The Shoremen won seven of the game's 11 face-offs; freshman midfielder Thayer Damm (Huntington Valley, PA/LaSalle) led the way with a six-for-nine performance on face-offs.
The Shoremen return to action Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. game at Centennial Conference opponent Dickinson.
