The Game Story:
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Sophomores took the spotlight Saturday for the Virginia Wesleyan College men's lacrosse team as Damian Becker and Curran Lee sparked the Marlins to a 20-7 non-conference win over the Blazers of Maryland's Hood College on Foster Field at the Trinder Center.

Becker (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) and Lee (Calgary, Alberta/Delta West) both scored a career-high six goals each to help the Marlins (1-1) take control and dominate. Becker, who scored four goals in the fourth quarter, also produced a career-high five assists.

Hood (0-1) scored first when Nick Spicer found the net at the 11:08 mark of the first quarter. But, Lee came back with consecutive goals off assists from Becker and rookie Mike Tibbs (Baltimore, Md./Northeast), before Blake Rust tied the game for the Blazers.

Rookie Travis Puls (Ellicott City, Md./Baltimore Mt. St. Joseph) scored off a Becker pass to give VWC a 3-2 lead after one quarter, only to see the Blazer knot the score again, opening the second quarter with a scoring shot by Kris Miner.

But, Puls, junior Tim Homa (Baltimore, Md./Loch Raven), and Becker scored in that order to create some breathing room for Virginia Wesleyan. After Homa and Hood's Dominique Shorter exchanged goals for their teams to open the third quarter, the Marlins pulled away for good when Tibbs and Lee moved in for shots that gave VWC a 9-4 advantage. Miner cut it 9-5 for Hood, only to see VWC answer with five consecutive scores to open up a 14-5 lead with 2:51 remaining in the third quarter. Lee scored twice in that decisive run.

Virginia Wesleyan put the game away with five straight goals in the fourth quarter, including three by Becker, pushing the Marlin lead to 19-6 with 8:30 remaining to be played.

Homa finished with three goals and two assists for VWC, Puls added three goals, and rookie Gabe Brumett (Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams) scored one. Senior Drew Langis (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) and Tibbs recorded two assists and junior Eric Anderson (Pasadena, Md./Northeast), sophomore Ricky Kronberger (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron), and rookie Brock Waddell (Windsor, Colo./Fossil Ridge) all added one assist each.

Miner, Shorter, and Rust all scored two goals each for Hood, which also recorded an assist each from Sofiane Lazar and Miner.

VWC outshot the Blazers 52-24. Hood goalie Nicholas O'Brien recorded 12 saves. Junior goalie John-Paul Novak (Centreville, Va./Chantilly Westfield) had 10 for Virginia Wesleyan and rookie Joe Malazita (Earlysville, Va./Covenant) finished with two.
