| CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Visiting Hampden-Sydney College scored the first six goals of the game en route to a 17-8 win over host Washington College in a non-conference men's lacrosse game this afternoon on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium. The Tigers improved to 3-2 with the win, while the Shoremen fell to 2-2 with the loss. The Tigers held a 15-3 advantage in shots in the first quarter, netting their half-dozen goals before the Shoremen got on the board with an extra-man goal by freshman attackman Mike Lewis (Mt. Airy, MD/Glenelg Country School) off an assist from freshman attackman Patrick Coyle (Reisterstown, MD/Calvert Hall) with 29 seconds to go in the period. Hampden-Sydney added eight second-quarter goals on just 11 shots to take a 14-4 lead into halftime. Ben Clarke scored a game-high four goals for the Tigers, while Kyle Jett scored three and handed out four assists. Micah Keller and and Cole Hawthorne added three goals each, while Nate Cundy tallied a goal and two assists. Whit Kelley, Nick West, andKevin Coats each scored one goal, while Carter Mavromatis tallied a pair of assists.Mark Bagby played the first 52:36 in goal for the Tigers, making 19 saves and allowing seven goals. Matt Lewis led the Shoremen with three goals, while senior attackman Brendan O'Leary (Annapolis, MD/Broadneck) added a goal and two assists and Coyle had a goal and an assist. Junior midfielder Nash Evans-Hodgson (Maple Grove, MN/Maple Grove), senior midfielder Mike Lewis (Mt. Airy, MD/South Carroll), and freshman midfielder Jesse Speth (Chicago, IL/Northside Prep) scored one goal each. Freshman midfielderBennett Cord (Gaithersburg, MD/Gaithersburg) handed out two assists, while senior midfielder Chad Freedman (Charlottesville, VA/St. Anne's Belfield) and freshman defenseman Matt Torr (Timonium, MD/Boys Latin) had one helper each. The Shoremen held a 42-35 advantage in shots in the game on the strength of a 19-0 margin in the fourth quarter. Washington also won 16 of the game's 28 face-offs, though the Tigers won seven of eight in the opening quarter. The Shoremen return to action Saturday with their Centennial Conference opener, a 1:00 p.m. game at Muhlenberg. |
