| CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Nineteenth-ranked host Washington College got a 10-for-14 performance on face-offs from senior midfielder Thayer Damm (Huntingdon Valley, PA/LaSalle) in a 7-5 Centennial Conference men's lacrosse victory over visiting Swarthmore tonight on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium. The Garnet (4-5, 3-3 Centennial) struck first in the game as Gavin Musynske scored off an assist from Ben Young with 12:19 to play in the first quarter. Washington (9-3, 4-2) tied the score when senior midfielder Casey O'Connor (Crownsville, MD/Archbishop Spalding) found senior midfielder Matt Moreton (Darnestown, MD/Northwest) for an extra-man goal with 10:03 to play in the opening period. The Shoremen took the lead on a goal by junior attackman Brendan O'Leary (Annapolis, MD/Broadneck) off an assist from senior attackman Jimmy Kielek (Baltimore, MD/Archbishop Curley) with 7:09 left in quarter. Washington upped its lead to 3-1 with a man-down goal by sophomore midfielder Emmert Schamburg (Reisterstown, MD/Boys Latin) with 13:41 left in the second. The Garnet got back on the board with a Tyler Bradshaw goal off a Henry Heaton assist to cut the lead to 3-2 with 8:46 left in the half. The Shoremen then scored three times in the final 3:45 before intermission to build a 6-2 halftime lead. Moreton scored with 3:45 on the clock, O'Connor with 1:19 to go, and sophomore midfielder Doug Herdegen (Baltimore, MD/Archbishop Curley) off an assist from sophomore attackman Shane Kaski (Richmond, VA/Midlothian) with 11 seconds left. Neither team scored again until the Garnet made it 6-3 on a Bradshaw goal with 3:46 to play in the third. Kielek answered for the Shoremen with a goal off an assist from sophomore attackman Josh Perlow (Owings Mills, MD/Boys Latin) with 1:54 left in the quarter. Swarthmore scored twice in the fourth quarter to whittle the lead down to 7-5, but could get no closer. Anthony Phalen scored an extra-man goal off a Stelios Wilson assist with 9:18 remaining and found Musynske for a goal with 4:26 to play. Moreton led the Washington offense with two goals, while Kielek and O'Connor each added a goal and an assist. Bradshaw and Musynske each scored twice for the Garnet, while Phalen notched a goal and an assist. Damm added eight ground balls to go along with his 10-for-14 performance on face-offs. Senior goalie Gordon Cohen (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan) made nine saves for the Shoremen, while Kevin Friedenberg made 15 stops for Swarthmore. Washington held a 32-24 advantage in shots in the game and a 31-21 edge in ground balls. The Shoremen return to action Saturday with a 4:00 p.m. Centennial Conference home game against Dickinson. |
