Shoremen Make it Nine in a Row WC Handles Swarthmore, 18-2

CHESTERTOWN, MD -- It was a familiar scene at Kibler Field this afternoon as host Washington College, the fifth-ranked team in Division III, rolled to another home victory. The Shoremen posted their ninth straight win, defeating Swarthmore 18-2 in Centennial Conference play, and have now outscored their opponents, 83-14, on their home field this season.

Junior midfielder Steve Berger (Jessup, MD/Mt. St. Joseph) scored four goals and assisted on two others in the win, while sophomore attackman Jon Spivey (Timonium, MD/Dulaney) scored one goal and netted four assists and senior attackman Chris Edwards (Baltimore, MD/Boys' Latin) scored four goals. Junior midfielders Randy Vane (Sparks, MD/Gilman School) and Michael Dyal (West Palm Beach, FL/Hotchkiss School, CT) and freshman midfielder Stuart King (Crozet, VA/St. Anne's-Belfield) each scored two goals. King and freshman attackman Mike Christie (Darien, CT/Canterbury School) each scored their first collegiate goal in the victory.

Junior goalie Richard Yost (Westminster, MD/St. Paul's) made nine saves and allowed just one goal in 50 minutes of action for the Shoremen.

John Cleaver paced Swarthmore (7-6 overall, 3-4 Centennial) with one goal and one assist.

Washington, now 9-2 overall and 7-0 in conference play this season, is one win away from posting its first unbeaten Centennenial Conference season since 1997. A win Thursday at 13th-ranked McDaniel would give the Shoremen hosting rights for the Centennial Conference playoffs. McDaniel improved to 6-0 in the conference with an 18-9 win against eighth-ranked Franklin & Marshall today. Saturday's game is set for 1:30 p.m.
