|CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Eighth-ranked host Washington College scored five of the six second-half goals and got a career-high 21 saves from sophomore goalie Gordon Cohen (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan) en route to a 10-5 win over 12th-ranked Villa Julie in a non-conference men's lacrosse game tonight on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium.|
Washington (6-1) got on the board first when junior attackman Chris Read (Baltimore, MD/Boys Latin) scored off a feed from senior defenseman Dan MacDonald (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) with 10:50 left in the first period. Villa Julie (6-1) tied the score on a Dustin Harlowe goal with 6:52 to go in the period. Sophomore midfielder Matt Moreton (Darnestown, MD/Northwest) put the Shoremen ahead, 2-1, when he scored off an assist from senior midfielder Chris Mancini (Ocean City, MD/Worcester Prep) with 5:59 remaining. The Mustangs then took their first lead of the game as Andrew White scored off an assist from Jimmy Dailey at 5:10 and Nicola Bevacqua scored an unassisted goal 20 seconds later to put Villa Julie up, 3-2. The Shoremen tied the score before the end of the quarter, however, on a spin-move goal by sophomore attackman Jimmy Kielek (Baltimore, MD/Archbishop Curley) with 1:21 left in the period.
The Shoremen regained the lead when Read found Kielek with 12:03 to play in the second quarter, but Villa Julie answered with 10:35 remaining as White scored off an assist from Chris Baldwin. Washington quickly answered, however, when sophomore midfielder Casey O'Connor (Crownsville, MD/Archbishop Spalding) won the ensuing face-off and scored 13 seconds later to give the Shoremen a 5-4 lead at halftime.
Washington senior midfielder Mike Hughes (Pasadena, MD/Mount St. Joseph) scored the only goal of the third quarter off an assist from Kielek with 4:03 remaining in the period. The Shoremen opened things up in the fourth quarter as junior midfielder Kolyn Kirby (Chestertown, MD/Kent County) scored off a feed from Kielek with 13:15 on the clock and Read scored off a Hughes assist at 8:33 to extend the lead to 8-4. Villa Julie's final goal came with 6:10 to play as White scored off an assist from Baldwin. Washington senior midfielder Anthony Hidell (Wilmington, DE/Tower Hill) scored the last two goals of the game off assists from Read and Hughes with 5:08 and 3:13 to play, respectively, to provide the final margin.
Ten of Cohen's 21 saves came in the second half, when he allowed just one goal. The Shoremen's offense was spread out as Kielek, Read, and Hidell each tallied two goals and Hughes (one goal), Kielek, and Read each had two assists. Senior defenseman Jon Kenney (Amherst, NY/Amherst) scooped up a game-high seven ground balls.
White led Villa Julie with three goals. Jason Woodruff made 14 saves for the Mustangs.
Villa Julie held a 40-37 advantage in shots in the game. The Shoremen held a slight 39-38 advantage in ground balls, while the Mustangs won 10 of the game's 19 face-offs.
The Shoremen return to action Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. Centennial Conference game at McDaniel.
