|The Game Story:|
|CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Washington & Lee built a 7-4 advantage after one quarter and and maintained a lead throughout the rest of the game en route to an 11-8 win
at host Washington College this afternoon in an NCAA Division III Tournament
Quarterfinal. The Generals (14-3) will take on Gettysburg College next weekend
in a semifinal game.
The Shoremen (13-4) opened the wild first quarter with a goal by sophomore midfielder Stephen Berger (Jessup, MD/Mt. St. Joseph) with 13:22 on the clock. W&L evened the score 23 seconds later with an unassisted goal by Matt Strickler, but WC got on the board again 43 seconds after that when Berger found senior attackman Craig Rentch (Annapolis, MD/Annapolis) for a goal. The Generals answered with a goal from Dustin Martin at 11:35, but WC took another lead 46 seconds later on Rentch goal. W&L's John Moore tied the score at 3-3 after receiving a pass from Matt Fink at 10:03.
The Generals took their first lead, one that they would not relinquish, at 8:46, when Andrew Barnett fed Gavin Molinelli for a score. W&L went up by two 25 seconds later as Moore again scored off a Fink assist. The Shoremen cut the lead to 5-4 with a goal by senior attackman Jon Fellows (Millington, MD/Kent County) at 7:26. At the 6:24 mark, Barnett scored off a Fink feed to push the lead back to two. Rich Williams scored the Generals' seventh goal of the period with 33 seconds on the clock.
After the eleven-goal first period, neither team got on the board in the second quarter and the score remained 7-4 at the break. W&L opened the third-quarter scoring at 14:25 with a Fink goal. The Shoreman then mounted a rally by scoring three unanswered goals. Sophomore midfielder Randy Vane (Sparks, MD/Gilman) started the spurt off with an unassisted tally at 12:24. Junior midfielder Chris Edwards (Baltimore, MD/Boys' Latin) scored off a Berger feed at 5:32 and Rentch added an unassisted goal at 5:19 to get WC back within one. The Generals would score the final goal of the period, however, as Martin scored off a pass from Barnett at 3:45.
The Generals increased their lead to three with 9:28 to go in the fourth when Fink scored on a Molinelli assist. W&L sealed the win with 2:58 left as Molinelli found Fink again to give the Generals an 11-7 lead. WC senior attackman Anders Strothman (Annapolis, MD/Boys' Latin) rounded out the scoring with a goal off an assist from sophomore midfielder Michael Dyal (West Palm Beach, FL/Hotchkiss School, CT) with eight seconds on the clock.
