|The Game Story:|
|CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Senior attacker Tom Brown (Laurel, MD/Hammond) scored the
game-winning goal with 1:38 remaining in the second overtime to lift No. 16
Western Maryland past No. 3 Washington College this afternoon in Chestertown.
The Green Terror improves to 12-1 overall and 5-1 in conference play, while the
Shoremen slip to 10-2 and 4-2.
Western Maryland took early leads of 2-1 and 3-2, but the Shoremen scored nine unanswered goals over a span of 16:42 bridging the first and second quarters to grab a 10-3 lead. Senior attackman Craig Rentch (Annapolis, MD/Annapolis) and junior attackman Eric Kuehn (Bel Air, MD/C. Milton Wright) each scored twice during the run. Kuehn's goal with 3:32 to play in the second gave WC its seven-goal lead. The Green Terror closed the half with two key goals, however, including a score by sophomore attacker Justin Merson (New Windsor, MD/Francis Scott Key) with 21 seconds to go before the break that cut the lead to 10-5. The Shoremen got off 36 shots in the first half to Western Maryland's 14.
The teams exchanged goals to open the third quarter before the Green Terror went on a 3-0 run. Junior defensemanGreg Elko (Lansdale, PA/North Penn) capped off the run with a goal at 7:17 in the third that trimmed the Shoreman lead to 11-9. Washington sophomore midfielder Michael Dyal (West Palm Beach, FL/The Hotchkiss School, CT) pushed the lead back to three with a goal off a feed from senior attackman Jon Fellows (Millington, MD/Kent County) with 6:28, but Western Maryland freshman attacker Rob Weaver (Laurel, MD/St. Vincent Pallotti) scored just seven seconds later off an assist from sophomore midfielder Jeremy Zenquis (Trenton, NJ/Lawrenceville School). Brown then scored off a pass from junior attackman Joe Ellis (Columbia, MD/Oakland Mills) with 3:49 left in the quarter to knot the score at 12-12.
The Shoremen got on the board first in the fourth quarter when Kuehn scored with 10:00 to play. Western Maryland sophomore defender Joel Mattingley (Royal Oak, MD/St. Peter & Paul) tied the score again with 8:51 to go. The Shoremen took their final lead with 7:34 on the clock in regulation when Fellows found senior midfielder Brad Hopkins (Kennedyville, MD/Kent County) for a goal. The Green Terror tied the game at 14-14 when Ellis scored with 4:29 on the clock. Western Maryland got off several shots in the final minute of play, but the WC defense forced overtime.
Brown's game-winner came off a clear attempt by the Shoreman defense following a defensive stop late in the second overtime. Freshman goalie Alex Pirani (Woburn, MA/Winchester/Bridgton, ME) attempted to pass the ball to his midfield, but the ball never got more than a few feet as Brown picked off his pass outside the crease and fired in the goal to win the game.
Weaver led Western Maryland with five goals. Ellis scored three goals and had one assists, while Brown scored three goals, all in the final 28:50 of the game. Fellows scored a pair of goals and assisted on two others for the Shoremen, while Kuehn tallied four goals. Rentch finished with two goals and two assist, while sophomore midfielder Stephen Berger (Jessup, MD/Mount St. Joseph) added two goals and one assist.
The two squads will meet again Friday in the second of two Centennial Conference semifinals played at top-seeded Gettysburg.
