|Lewis Nets a Career-High Four Goals|
CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Eighteenth-ranked host Washington College scored four goals in the fourth quarter to pull away from visiting McDaniel en route to an 8-4 win over the Green Terror in a Centennial Conference Men's Lacrosse Semifinal game this afternoon on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium. The Shoremen improved to 11-4 with the win and advanced to their first Centennial Conference Championship game since 2008. Washington will face 13th-ranked Dickinson in Sunday's championship game at 1:00 p.m.
The Shoremen jumped out to a 3-0 lead as junior attackman Matt Lewis (Mt. Airy, MD/Glenelg Country School) scored with 10:13 to go in the first and senior attackman Dominic Serio (Finksburg, MD/Mount St. Joseph) followed with a goal with 5:25 on the clock. Freshman attackman Grant Hughes (Alexandria, VA/St. Stephen's & St. Agnes) opened the second-quarter scoring with a goal with 8:06 left before the intermission.
William Clary got the Green Terror on the board with 7:08 left in the second and DJ Rickels pulled McDaniel to within a goal off an assist from Ben Yancheski with 3:14 left.
Washington scored the only goal of the third quarter when Lewis scored a behind-the-back goal off an assist from sophomore midfielder Hunter Nowicki (Baltimore, MD/Franklin) with 7:40 to go in the third.
Washington opened the fourth quarter with three unanswered goals to open up a 7-2 lead. Lewis netted his third of the day 1:55 into the period, Hughes scored off an assist from sophomore defenseman Casey McKnight (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield) with 10:11 to go, and freshman midfielder Luke Birnbaum (Melville, NY/Half Hollows Hill East) scored off a Serio feed with 7:26 to play. McKnight's assist was his first career point and Birnbaum's goal was his first career goal.
Rickels ended Washington's run with a goal with 4:25 to go to trim the lead to 7-3, but Lewis scored his fourth goal with 3:39 left. McDaniel scored with four seconds left in the game as Matt Dupras fired in a goal off a feed from Michael Woglom to provide the final margin.
Lewis's four goals were a career high. Hughes (two goals) and Serio (one goal, one assist) joined Lewis as Shoremen with multiple points. Rickels led the Green Terror with two goals.
Senior goalie Peter Stewart (Annapolis, MD/St. Mary's) made nine saves in the win for Washington, while Brad Motley made 16 saves and scooped up a game-high seven ground balls in the loss for the Green Terror.
The Shoremen held a 42-21 advantage in shots and a 37-29 advantage in ground balls in the game. Washington also won 10 of the game's 16 face-offs.
Dickinson defeated 20th-ranked Gettysburg, 10-5, in the day's second semifinal. The Shoremen will be playing in their ninth Centennial Conference Championship game in the tournament's 12-year history.
