|CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Junior midfielder Andrew Ostrusky (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park/Bridgton, ME) scored three goals as ninth-ranked host Washington College defeated visiting Ursinus College, 9-6, in a Centennial Conference men's lacrosse game this evening at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium. The Shoremen improved to 8-1 overall and 2-1 in conference play with the win, while the Bears fell to 2-6 and 0-2.|
The Shoremen scored the first three goals of the game. Senior midfielder Ryan Morrison (Manhasset, NY/Manhasset/Salisbury School, CT) scored off an assist from sophomore attackman Chris Read (Baltimore, MD/Boys Latin) with 12:21 left in the first quarter, Ostrusky scored with 6:14 to play in the first quarter, and Read scored off a Morrison assist with 6:54 left in the second quarter.
The Bears got on the board with a Mike Stein goal with 6:10 to play in the second, but Washington answered with an extra-man goal by senior attackman Sam Lane (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield) off an assist from freshman attackman Jimmy Kielek (Baltimore, MD/Archbishop Curley) with 4:15 left in the second quarter that made it 4-1. Ursinus cut the lead to one goal by halftime as Stein scored off an assist from Seth Bakes with 2:42 on the clock and Jason Paterson scored with 1:07 left in the period to trim the margin to 4-3.
Washington scored the first two goals of the third quarter to push the lead to 6-3. Ostrusky scored off a Kielek assist with 13:34 remaining in the period and Lane scored a man-down goal off an assist from junior defenseman Dan MacDonald (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) with 6:38 left in the third. The assist was the first of MacDonald's collegiate career. Dane Mangin scored an extra-man goal eight seconds later for the Bears off an assist from Bakes to pull Ursinus to within two goals at 6-4. Kielek fired in a goal for Washington with 5:11 left in the period to make it 7-4, but Anthony Tori scored an extra-man goal for the Bears with 3:26 left in the third to trim the lead to 7-5. Ostrusky scored off an extra-man goal for the Shoremen off an assist from junior attackman Kevin Nolan (Clark, NJ/A.L. Johnson) with 2:31 left in the period to give the Shoremen an 8-5 lead after three quarters.
Neither team scored again until Washington sophomore attackman Mike Sutter (Ellicott City, MD/Mount St. Joseph) scored for the Shoremen with 6:29 remaining in the fourth quarter to extend the lead to 9-5. Mangin scored off an assist from Nick Shriver with 1:26 to go to provide the final margin.
Lane scored two goals to join Ostrusky as a multiple-goal scorer for the Shoremen. Kielek finished with a goal and two assists, while Morrison and Read each had one goal and one assist. Mangin and Stein each scored two goals for the Bears, while Bakes tallied two assists.
Each team got off 29 shots in the game. Senior goalie Kevin Thibadeau (Cheshire, CT/Avon Old Farms) made 17 stops for the Shoremen, while Matt Orlando tallied eight saves for the Bears.
Washington held a 44-35 advantage in ground balls as senior defenseman Tim Kerr (Pasadena, MD/Mount St. Joseph) scooped up a game-high eight. The Shoremen also held a 10-7 advantge in face-offs.
The Shoremen return to action Saturday with a 1:30 p.m. Centennial Conference home game against second-ranked Gettysburg. The official dedication of Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium will take place at halftime of that game.
