|CHESTERTOWN, MD -- The third-ranked Washington College men's lacrosse team
improved to 10-0 overall and 3-0 in Centennial Conference play this season
with a 7-4 win over visiting Ursinus College today at Kibler Field, but not
before rallying from a 4-2 third quarter deficit against the Bears, who are
in their second season of varsity competition.
The Shoremen, who are 10-0 for the first time in team history, did not take their first lead of the game until the final minute of the third quarter. After a scoreless first period, Ursinus (4-4, 0-2) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second quarter. Mike Stein scored a man-up goal off an assist from Carlo Fusco with 13:56 left in the period and then scored a man-down goal off a feed from Gavin Goane at 8:21. Goane then fired in an unassisted goal with 4:07 left in the half to give the Bears their 3-0 lead.
Washington got on the board with two quick goals in the final 30 seconds of the half. Senior midfielder Stephen Berger (Columbia, MD/Mt. St. Joseph) scored off a feed from sophomore attackman Sam Lane (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield) with 28 seconds on the clock and then found senior midfielder Michael Dyal (West Palm Beach, FL/Hotchkiss School, CT) for a goal with 20 seconds left to cut the lead to 3-2 at the break.
Stein gave Ursinus a 4-2 lead when he shoveled in a loose ball with 11:56 left in the third quarter. The Shoremen began a 5-0 run to end the game when junior attackman Jon Spivey (Timonium, MD/Dulaney) scored off an assist from freshman attackman Andrew Ostrusky (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park/Bridgton, ME) with 8:56 remaining in the third. Senior midfielder Michael McWilliams (Essex, NJ/West Essex) fired in a goal off a feed from Berger to knot the score at 4-4 with 2:18 to play in the period.
Berger gave the Shoremen their first lead of the contest with an unassisted marker with 45 seconds left in the third to make it 5-4. He added a man-up goal off an assist from freshman attackman Kevin Nolan (Clark, NJ/A.L. Johnson) with 19 seconds to go in the quarter to push the lead to 6-4. A man-up goal by Dyal off an assist from senior midfielder Brent Renner (Fairfax, VA/W.T. Woodson) with 6:37 left in the fourth quarter accounted for the final margin.
Both goalies came up big for their respective squads. Senior Richard Yost (Westminster, MD/St. Paul's) made 17 saves for the Shoremen, including 12 in the second half, while Matt Orlando made 22 stops for the Bears, including 13 in the first half.
Berger scored three goals and assisted on two others to lead the Washington offense, while Dyal totaled two goals. Stein led Ursinus with three goals, while Goane finished with one goal and one assist.
The Shoremen held a 40-32 advantage in shots in the game and a 43-32 edge in ground balls.
The Shoremen return to action one week from today with a Centennial Conference home game against fifth-ranked Gettysburg.
