| CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Eighth-ranked host Washington College built a 4-1 lead after one quarter and blew the game open by scoring all four fourth-quarter goals in a 13-5 win over visiting Muhlenberg College in the Centennial Conference men's lacrosse opener for both schools this afternoon on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium. The Shoremen improved to 5-1 overall with the win, while the Mules slipped to 3-1. After the Shoremen took a 3-0 lead in the game, Washington led by at least two goals the rest of the way. Sophomore attackman Jimmy Kielek (Baltimore, MD/Archbishop Curley) netted three goals and added one assist in the win, while junior attackman Chris Read (Baltimore, MD/Boys Latin) had two goals and two assists and senior midfielders Andrew Ostrusky (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park/Bridgton, ME) and Mike Hughes (Pasadena, MD/Mount St. Joseph) tallied two goals and one assist each. Sophomore midfielder Matt Moreton (Darnestown, MD/Northwest) added two goals of his own, while senior midfielder Anthony Hidell (Wilmington, DE/Tower Hill) had two assists. Washington senior defenseman Jon Kenney (Amherst, NY/Amherst) scooped up a career-best 10 ground balls in the win to go along with one goal. Sophomore goalie Gordon Cohen (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan) made 14 saves for the Shoremen. Sean Toohil was the only Muhlenberg player with multiple goals, finishing with two. Tim Dwyre added two assists. Andrew Bell made 11 stops for the Mules. Washington held a 34-27 advantage in shots and a 39-29 advantage in ground balls in the game. Muhlenberg won 13 of the game's 22 face-offs. The Shoremen return to action Wednesday with a 7:00 p.m. home game against 14th-ranked Villa Julie. B |
