|The Game Story:|
|LEXINGTON, Va. -- Sophomore attackman Matt Fink (Wilmington,
Del./Tatnall) scored a career-high five goals to lead Washington and Lee
to an 11-3 win over neighboring VMI in the 15th annual Lee Jackson
Lacrosse Classic on Wednesday evening at the W&L Turf Field. For W&L,
the win was its 14th straight over the Keydets.
Fink and VMI senior midfielder Ben Midura (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) received the Worrell-Fallon Trophy as the game MVP's.
W&L senior attackman Andrew Barnett (Darien, Conn./Darien) started the scoring as he found the net unassisted just 53 seconds into the game. The Keydets (1-7) answered back at the 12:28 mark of the first quarter as Midura scored off an assist from freshman midfielder Jeffrey Rummell (Hudson, Ohio/Western Reserve) on an extra man situation.
However, Fink scored three unasnwered goals over a span of 2:21 igniting a run of seven straight General goals for an 8-1 W&L lead at the half.
The Generals (7-2) scored two more goals in the third period, one by Fink off an assist from Barnett and another unassisted by senior midfielder John Moore (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll) for a 10-1 lead heading into the final period.
VMI answered with unassisted goals by Midura and senior midfielder John Eddy (Tully, N.Y./Tully) to cut the W&L lead to 10-3 with 5:57 remaining before Fink scored an extra man goal off an assist from sophomore midfielder Dustin Martin (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) with 4:35 remaining to provide the final margin.
Barnett tallied three goals and one assist, while freshman attackman Gavin Molinelli (Northport, N.Y./Northport) recorded two goals and two assists for W&L. Sophomore Ansel Sanders (Weems, Va./Woodberry Forest) and freshman Pat Casey (Rockville, Md./Georgetown Prep) combined to make 11 saves in goal.
Midura led VMI with a pair of goals, while junior Brian Ward (Novi, Mich./Novi) stopped nine shots in net.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Apr. 14 as it hosts Hampden-Sydney for a 1:30 pm contest.
