| LEXINGTON, Va. -- Sophomore attackman Gavin Molinelli (Northport,
N.Y./Northport) recorded a goal and assisted on three others as
sixth-ranked Washington and Lee opened its men's lacrosse season with an
8-3 win over Bates at the W&L turf field on Saturday afternoon.
The Generals (1-0) led just 3-2 at the half and 5-3 after three quarters, but broke the game open with three fourth-quarter goals. Sophomore attackman Jack Murray (Earlysville, Va./Albemarle) gave W&L a 6-3 lead with a goal off an assist from junior attackman Matt Fink (Wilmington, Del./Tatnall) with 14:25 remaining in the game. Murray found the net again at the 8:02 mark off a feed from Molinelli, and Molinelli scored off an assist by Fink with 7:08 remaining to provide the final margin. Murray finished the game with three goals, while junior midfielder Mark McLewee (Timonium, Md./Dulaney) added two goals of his own. Fink finished with a pair of assists. Junior Ansel Sanders (Weems, Va./Woodberry Forest) logged all 60 minutes in goal, registering seven saves. Bates (0-1) received a goal each from sophomore attackman Peter Friedman (Putney, Vt./Peddie School), freshman midfielder Brenton Pitt (Duxbury, Mass.) and sophomore midfielder Dan Ross (Chevy Chase, Md./Sidwell Friends). Senior goalie Mark Dobbyn (Warren, R.I./Moses Brown) stopped 14 shots in net. For the game, W&L outshot the Bobcats, 42-14, and held a 39-27 advantage on ground balls.
