| LEXINGTON, Va. — Senior attackman Jack Murray (Earlysville, Va./Albemarle) scored a career-high four goals and assisted on another to lead eighth-ranked Washington and Lee to a 9-8 win over sixth-ranked Gettysburg on Saturday afternoon at the W&L Turf Field. Murray notched two goals and an assist during a 4-1 Generals' run to open the game. W&L held a 5-2 lead in the second quarter, before the Bullets (0-1) went on a three-goal run to tie the game at 5-5 at the half. Junior attackman Chase Stewart (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown) scored a pair of goals during the run, while senior midfielder Jon Sowanick (Bethesda, Md./Bullis) scored the equalizer with just 24 seconds remaining in the second period. W&L (2-0) and Gettysburg traded goals to start the third period, before the Generals went on a three-goal run to assume a 9-6 lead entering the fourth period. Murray capped the run on a goal with eight seconds remaining in the quarter off an assist from sophomore midfielder Jim Ryan (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy). The Bullets pulled to within 9-8 on an unassisted goal by junior midfielder T.J. Liberto (Arnold, Md./St. Mary's) with 4:55 left in the game, but W&L held on for its second-straight one-goal win over a Top 10 opponent. Murray's effort was supplemented by senior attackman Gavin Molinelli (Northport, N.Y./Northport), who tallied one goal and one assist. Junior midfielder Perrin Monroe (Washington, D.C./Phillips Exeter) added a pair of assists, while sophomore goalie Chris Lalli (Cranbury, N.J./Princeton) was again spectacular in goal, recording 15 saves. Gettysburg was led by Stewart, who totaled three goals. Junior attackman Evan Gallant (Lutherville, Md./Loyola), junior midfielder Chris Renzi (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) and Sowanick each amassed one goal and one assist. Sophomore Pat Vaughan (Cockeysville, Md./Loyola) stopped five shots in goal. Washington and Lee returns to action on Wednesday as it hosts Elizabethtown for a 3:30 pm contest. |
