|CHESTERTOWN, MD -- The seventh-ranked Washington College men's lacrosse team scored the final three goals of the third quarter to build a four-goal lead and held off host Washington and Lee en route to an 8-6 non-conference victory over the Generals this evening in Lexington, VA. The Shoremen improve to 4-0 on the season with the win, while the Generals slipped to 2-2 with the loss.|
Sophomore attackman Chris Read (Baltimore, MD/Boys Latin) gave Washington a quick 1-0 lead with a goal off an assist from junior attackman Kevin Nolan (Clark, NJ/A.L. Johnson) just 40 seconds into the game. The Generals evened the score when Harry St. John scored with 8:49 remaining in the first quarter. Read put the Shoremen back in front with a goal with 7:24 left in the period, but Jim Ryan pulled W&L even with a goal with 5:14 to go in the quarter.
Washington senior defenseman Tim Kerr (Pasadena, MD/Mount St. Joseph) scored in transition with 9:47 to play in the second quarter and senior attackman Sam Lane (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield) scored an extra-man goal off an assist from freshman midfielder Casey O'Connor (Crownsville, MD/Archbishop Spalding) with 5:11 on the clock to give the Shoremen a 4-2 lead. St. John scored off an assist from Ned Rider with 25 seconds left in the half to trim the lead to 4-3, but junior midfielder Andrew Ostrusky (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park/Bridgton, ME) answered for the Shoremen with a goal with just six seconds remaining in the period to make it 5-3.
W&L got back within one goal as Tyler Lenczuk opened the third-quarter scoring with a goal off an assist from Matt Arcati with 11:03 left in the quarter. Washington then went its three-goal run to take an 8-4 lead after three quarters of play. Nolan opened the run with a goal with 8:10 on the clock, Lane scored off an assist from sophomore midfielder Andrew Generazio (Springfield, VA/West Springfield/Bridgton, ME) with 4:43 remaining in the period, and Ostrusky scored with 1:33 to go in the third quarter.
The Generals tried to mount a rally in the fourth quarter as Ryan scored with 8:54 to play and Rider scored off an assist from Tim Skeen with 3:44 remaining to bring W&L back within two goals, but the Shoremen held on for the win.
Read, Lane, and Ostrusky each finished with two goals for Washington, while Nolan tallied one goal and one assist. St. John and Ryan each scored two goals for W&L, while Rider contributed one goal and one assist.
Washington senior goalie Kevin Thibadeau (Cheshire, CT/Avon Old Farms) made 15 saves in the win. Chris Lalli made 14 stops in the loss for W&L.
W&L held a 40-33 advantage in shots in the game. Both teams finished with 34 ground balls; Lalli led the Generals with a game-high nine ground balls, while Kerr scooped up a team-high six ground balls for the Shoremen. Washington held a 10-8 advantage in face-offs.
Including tonight's game, seven of the past eight regular-season meetings between the Shoremen and the Generals have been decided by two goals or less.
The Shoremen return to action Tuesday with a 3:30 p.m. game at Guilford.
