| LEXINGTON, Va. * Senior midfielder Pat Collins (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) scored off an assist by senior attackman Gavin Molinelli (Northport, N.Y./Northport) with 0.8 seconds remaining in overtime to lift fourth-ranked Washington and Lee to a 7-6 win over Elizabethtown in men's lacrosse action on Wednesday afternoon at Wilson Field. The Blue Jays (0-3) took a 6-5 lead with 2:17 remaining in regulation on an unassisted goal by senior midfielder Justin Griffey (Aberdeen, Md./Aberdeen). However, W&L tied the game at 6-6 just 22 seconds later as Molinelli found the net off an assist by freshman attackman Ned Rider (Manakin-Sabot, Va./Collegiate). Neither team could find the net again in regulation, setting up Collins' game-winner in overtime. Elizabethtown opened a 4-2 lead with 6:18 remaining in the third period on a goal by Griffey off an assist by senior attackman Allen Churchman (Aston, Pa./Garnet Valley). The Generals then responded with three straight goals by Molinelli to end the third period with a 5-4 lead. A goal by sophomore midfielder Frankie Puzzangara (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) with 14:25 left in the fourth quarter and Griffey's late goal preceeded the Generals' late run. Molinelli led W&L (3-0) with a career-high four goals and one assist, while Rider had one goal and one assist. Senior attackman Jack Murray (Earlysville, Va./Albemarle) added a pair of assists. Sophomore Chris Lalli (Cranbury, N.J./Princeton) stopped seven shots in goal. Griffey, Puzzangara and senior attackman Matt Newell (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) each had two goals for the Blue Jays. Churchman had two assists, while senior Fran McKeever (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) notched 11 saves in goal. Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday as it hosts Franklin & Marshall for a 6:00 pm contest on the W&L Turf Field. |
