| LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee men's lacrosse team had 11 different players record a goal in posting a 23-4 victory over Ferrum in the season-opener for both teams on Tuesday evening at Wilson Field. The Generals (1-0) scored just 40 seconds into the contest when junior midfielder Joe Wood (Bronxville, N.Y./Bronxville) found the net unassisted. Wood's goal was the first in a 5-0 string to start the game for W&L. Ferrum (0-1) got on the board with 3:57 left in the first quarter when sophomore midfielder Daniel Batong (Port Republic, Md./Saint Mary's Ryken) scored unassisted, but the Generals tallied with 26 seconds left in the period and added seven more goals in the second quarter for a 13-1 lead at the half. Sophomore attackman Cameron Dabir (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich./Culver Academy) notched two goals and two assists during the run, while first-year midfielder Will Douthat (Roanoke, Va./Patrick Henry) found the goal twice as well. Junior attackman Sean Gebhard (Fox Point, Wisc./Marquette University School) scored just 22 seconds into the third quarter, continuing a run of 11 straight goals dating back to the first quarter. Dabir finished off the stretch with a goal off an assist from senior midfielder Luke Heinsohn (Charlottesville, Va./Covenant) to give the Generals a 16-1 lead with 8:17 left in the penultimate quarter. Ferrum added two goals in the fourth quarter, one by Batong and another by junior attackman Dylan Burdick (Stafford, Va./Mountain View), to make it a 19-4 game with 3:19 left. The Generals then added three extra-man goals in the last 2:18 for the final margin. Gebhard scored a career-high four goals in the game, and Dabir tied a career-high with six points coming on three goals and three assists. Wood, Douthat and junior midfielder Jack Reuter (Rockville Center, N.Y./Chaminade) all scored three goals, while senior midfielder Cooper Brown (Baltimore, Md./Gilman) recorded a pair of goals. Senior attackman Mac Means (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley Academy) chipped in one goal and three assists. Sophomore Warren Berenis (Ocoee, Fla./Lake Highland Prep), junior Dylan Florig (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) and first-year Wyatt Devine (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Academy) all played in goal for W&L. Berenis played the opening 40:35 and made three saves with two goals allowed to earn the win. Batong led the Panthers' offense with two goals. Senior Josh Liptak (Cary, N.C./Athens Drive) played the first half in goal for Ferrum, allowing 13 goals and saving 12 shots. Junior Damian Pulos (Springfield, Va./Robert E. Lee) played the final two quarters and posted 12 saves with 10 goals allowed. Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday, when it hosts Christopher Newport for a 3:00 pm contest. |
