|The Game Story:|
|BOSTON, Mass. – For the second season in a row, Roger Williams defeated Wentworth Institute of Technology to advance to the semifinal round of the Commonwealth Coast Conference Men’s Lacrosse Tournament. While last year’s double-overtime win was clearly more dramatic for the Hawks, this year they had to withstand being a man down for the final 13 seconds, as well as great hustle to be awarded possession with one second left to secure the win.|
The two teams traded goals in the early going, as the Leopards would score first when junior midfielder Nick Lambros (Forestdale, Mass.) found classmate Tim Lunt (Salem, Mass.), who fired a shot into the back of the net 1:15 into the contest. Less than two minutes later, Roger Williams would tie the game on an unassisted goal from junior midfielder Dave Plescia (Old Tappan, N.J.). Later in the period, Wentworth senior midfielder Joe Marcel (Levittown, N.Y.) put Wentworth ahead 2-1, but with 5:16 left, junior midfielder Tony MacDonald (Hudson, Mass.) pulled the game even again.
Plescia scored the only goal of the second period, as he tallied an extra-man goal, assisted by freshman attackman Joe Paratore ( Deer Park, N.Y.), with 11:01 left in the period.
Trailing 3-2 entering the third period, Marcel scored 1:41 into the stanza to tie the game, yet again. Freshman Thomas Zygmant (Southport, Conn.) gave Wentworth a 4-3 lead with 7:13 left. However, the lead would be short-lived as MacDonald would find freshman attackman Dave Hurley (Hanover, Mass.) a scant eight seconds later. MacDonald would get his second assist on the contest with 3:15 left in the period, when he fed Paratore to give the Hawks a 5-4 lead.
Freshman midfielder Sean Benner (Ardmore, Pa.) scored what would stand as the game-winner, when he scored an unassisted tally with 10:02 left in the final quarter to give Roger Williams a 6-4 lead. However, Wentworth pulled within one when senior attackman Ryan McGovern (Marstons Mills, Mass.) took a feed from classmate Russ Peterson (Bennington, Vt.) and scored a man-up goal with 9:23 left.
The Hawks would have two chances later in the period to put some distance between themselves and the hosts, but a stingy defense caused two turnovers. However, the Leopard offense could not control the ball in the offensive zone, failing to get the equalizer.
With 13 seconds left, a personal foul was called on the Hawks in their own zone, giving Wentworth possession and an extra man. The Leopards were able to move the ball to get off a good shot, but it was wide left. Sophomore goalie Bobby Hensley (Simsbury, Conn.) sprinted toward the end line, and was the closest to the ball, giving Roger Williams possession with one second left, and dashing Wentworth’s hopes of tying the game.
Hensley made 22 saves for the Hawks, who improved to 7-7-1 and travel to top-seeded Endicott Thursday afternoon for a semifinal contest. Leopard senior Rich Hamaty (Hingham, Mass.) made 11 saves for the Leopards, who see their season come to an end with a 5-8 record.
