The Game Story:
With a stiffling defensive effort that produced the first shutout since 1970 and only the fourth goosegg in team history, Wesleyan knocked off Williams, 8-0, in a NESCAC semi-final at Tufts Sat., May 5, setting up a fourth consecutive showdown with Middlebury for the NESCAC title. Middlebury held off Tufts, 8-7, to reach the finals. The last shutout by the men's lacrosse team came in a 7-0 victory over Tufts April 4, 1970. Goalie Charlie Congleton '07 (#33, main photo) only needed to make six saves during his 53 minutes in the net while sub Mike Borrero '09 tacked on one more before it was over. At the other end, the Cardinals got two goals and an assist from midfielder leader Mike Hines '07 (#7, photo insert upper right), two goals from Grayson Connors '08 and a goal and an assist from Jason Ben-Eliyahu '09, his team'high 33 goal of the year. Wesleyan, ranked fourth nationally, defeated Middlebury, 5-4 in overtime during the regular season but lost each of the last three championship contests to the Panthers. Last year's meeting in Middlebury was a 10-9 decision with the game-winning goal coming at the buzzer in the fourth period. The annoucement for the NCAA Division III tournament teams comes Sunday night between 9-10 pm on CSTV. The NESCAC winner gets an automatic berth. Wesleyan has received an at-large bid to the last two NCAA tournaments, reaching the semi-finals in 2006 and the quarter-finals in 2005.
