|Grantham, PA (Messiah College) --- Green Terror Defense Delivers Victory
Rob Weaver scored the game-winner on the second of his two goals with 9:42 remaining in the fourth quarter, as his McDaniel College men’s lacrosse team scraped out a 7-4 win over Denison University in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon. Weaver’s goal provided a slight but ample edge for the McDaniel defense, which kept Denison from twitching the twine most of the way.
The Green Terror defense put forth a solid effort forcing the Big Red’s attack to the perimeter from the outset. On the occasional lapse, goalie, Mike Korba, was there with saves, particularly in the fourth quarter when Denison threatened to make a move. The Big Red was able to pepper the keeper from 15 feet out throughout the final period, but Korba answered the call, making four of his 15 saves of the game when McDaniel held a tenuous one-goal lead.
Denison drew first blood when Bradford Seifert beat Korba with 6:30 left in the first quarter, however, the stricken McDaniel defense rallied to keep Denison off of the board for the next 37:47 of play. McDaniel was able to run the lead to 4-1 heading into the final quarter, but Denison scored a pair of goals early to get within one. Korba’s play stopped the bleeding, and McDaniel kept Denison in check with Weaver’s game-winner, which was followed 2:38 later when Alex Tolj beat Tom Moriarty for a touch of insurance.
With the win, McDaniel improves to 3-0. Denison falls to 0-3. McDaniel will return to action on Saturday, when the Green Terror hosts Cabrini College. This afternoon’s game was played at Messiah College in Grantham, Pennsylvania, as McDaniel’s field is still snow covered.
