March 16, 2005
The Game Story:
Sylvan Lake Park, Sanford, Florida --- MLAX: McDaniel 15, Western New England 13

Jim Townsend’s freshman class once again provided the fireworks as McDaniel College (3-1) handed Western New England (3-1) its first loss of the season in Orlando, Florida. The Green Terror defeated the Golden Bears 15-13 at Sylvan Lake Park to wrap up its Florida stint with a pair of wins.

Senior attack Rob Weaver (Laurel, MD / Pallotti) beat the Bears’ James Ells on a cross-cage shot with 11:32 left in the first quarter for the game-winner. Weaver’s extra-man marker was his second score of the afternoon. He was fed by one of his two freshman linemates, Cory Nellissen (Round Lake, NY/ Shenendehowa).

Nellissen finished the game with two goals and five assists, while Weaver wrapped up his afternoon with two goals and two assists. McDaniel’s other freshman attack, Kolyn Kirby (Chestertown, MD/Kent County), scored five goals giving him 18 on the season.

After stopping 20 shots in Monday’s win over Clarkson, freshman netminder Chad Schell (Medina, OH/Medina) posted 19 saves. The Terror was out shot for the third time in its last three contests, this time watching the Bears put 41 shots on McDaniel’s net against 37 going the other way.

Both teams were perfect on their man-up opportunities.

WNEC’s pre-season All-American CJ Annunciatta was held to one goal and two assists, but the Golden Bears’ Adam Cherry picked up the scoring slack with five goals and a helper. Ells stopped 12 McDaniel shots in the game.

With the win, McDaniel improves to 3-1, while WNEC falls to the same record. McDaniel returns from Florida on Thursday to prepare for its Centennial Season opener with Washington College on Saturday at noon. That game is the first half of a Centennial Conference double-header, and will be followed by the women’s game with Ursinus. Both halves of the double-header will be aired on Adelphia Cable in both Frederick and Carroll County throughout the weekend.
