| SPRINGFIELD, MA- The Wheaton College men's lacrosse team lost to
Western New England College, 12-7 Saturday afternoon in a non-conference
game at Golden Bear Stadium. Wheaton falls to 1-4 on the season, while
WNEC, snapping a four-game losing streak, improves to 2-4 overall.
The first half was a low scoring affair, with Western New England taking a 3-2 advantage into the half. The Golden Bears broke the game open in the third stanza, outscoring the Lyons, 7-3 in the period. Trailing 10-5 after three quarters, Wheaton only mustered a pair of goals over the final 15 minutes, giving WNEC the home victory. Junior Zak Putnam (Cape Elizabeth, ME/Cape Elizabeth) led the way for the Lyons with two goals and an assist, while fellow classmate Evan Carbotti (Newport, RI/Portsmouth Abbey) contributed two goals. Junior midfielder Chris Milligan (Madison, CT/Daniel Hand) had a goal and an assist, while senior J.J. Velez (New York, NY/South Kent) and junior Paul Leonard (East Grand Rapids, MI/East Grand Rapids) also added scores for Wheaton. Senior Tim Cinque (Lynbrook, NY/Lynbrook Senior) scored four goals for the Golden Bears, while sophomore Patrick Matthews (Middle Island, NY/St. Anthony's) added a hat-trick and an assist in the victory. Junior Marco Le Gette (Severna Park, MD/Mount St. Joseph) chipped in two goals and two assists for the victors. Wheaton junior goalie Bryant Denny (Fair Haven, NJ/Rumson-Fair Haven) denied 13 shots, while senior Patrick Dabrowski (Baltimore, MD/Boys Latin) stopped 18 shots for the Golden Bears. Wheaton will continue its road trip next Thursday with a non-league game at RPI, beginning at 7:00 p.m. The Lyons then return home one week from today to host Lasell College at 1:00 p.m. |
