March 27, 2004
The Game Story:
NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College men's lacrosse team battled back from an early 5-0 deficit and trailed nationally-ranked Bowdoin College, 6-5 in the opening minute of the third quarter Saturday afternoon, but the Polar Bears pushed their lead out to three goals en route to a 13-10 non-conference victory over the Lyons at Mirrione Stadium. Ranked 15th in the latest New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (NEILA) poll, Wheaton falls to 3-2 on the season, while Bowdoin, ranked 16th in the nation and fourth in New England, remains perfect with an overall mark of 5-0.

Wheaton and Bowdoin battled through nearly six minutes of scoreless play to open today's contest. The Polar Bears then triggered three goals over the next two minutes, as sophomores Connor Fitzgerald (Hingham, MA/Hingham) and Chris Eaton (Amherst, NH/Souhegan) and freshman Kevin Mullins (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) all scored. The Polar Bears extended their lead to 5-0 in the second period on the strength of goals from Fitzgerald and sophomore Ford Baker (Southborough, MA/Loomis Chaffee). Wheaton's offense came alive midway through the frame, scoring four of the game's next five goals to trim their deficit to 6-4 at the half. Senior Evan Carbotti (Newport, RI/Portsmouth Abbey) gave the Lyons a lift with two goals in the period.

In the opening minute of the second half, Wheaton's Chris Milligan (Madison, CT/Daniel Hand) beat Polar Bear goalie Grant White (Charlottesville, VA/Woodberry Forest) to narrow the gap to a single goal with 14:16 to play, but that's as close as the Lyons would get the rest of the way, as Bowdoin answered with a 4-1 mini-run to push its lead to 10-6 with six minutes on the clock. Fitzgerald assisted on three of the visitors' four goals during that stretch, carrying the Polar Bears into the fourth quarter with a 10-7 advantage.

Carbotti gave Wheaton one final gasp of hope with his third goal of the game transpiring just 23 seconds into the fourth period, but Bowdoin's Phil Stern (Maplewood, NJ/Choate Rosemary Hall) made the score 11-8 with 12:44 to go. The Polar Bears eventually secured the victory, stretching their lead back to four goals with 3:15 on the clock. Carbotti finished the game with three goals and an assist for the Lyons, while freshman Trey Helms (Cockeysville, MD/St. Paul's School) added three assists.

Bowdoin's Fitzgerald was impressive on the day, as he played a part in 10 of the Polar Bears' 13 goals with four tallies and six assists. Eaton and Baker finished with two goals apiece. In goal for the Lyons, senior Bryant Denny (Fair Haven, NJ/Rumson-Fair Haven) stopped 10 Bowdoin shots, while Grant posted 14 saves in the win.

Wheaton will remain at home on Tuesday, March 30 for a non-conference contest versus Plymouth State University. Game time is slated for a 4:00 p.m. start.
