The Game Story:
NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College men's lacrosse team picked up its first Pilgrim League victory of the season Saturday afternoon, as the Lyons defeated MIT, 17-12 at Elms Field. Snapping the Engineer three-game win streak, Wheaton equaled its win total from a year ago in posting a record of 6-5 overall, including a 1-3 mark in league play. MIT falls to 5-4 overall and 2-2 in the Pilgrim League.

The Engineers opened up the game's scoring with two quick goals within the first three minutes of play, as senior captain Eric Weinberg (Needham, MA/Needham) tallied the first goal while assisting on the other. Wheaton bounced back to reel off four unanswered goals to close the period with a 4-2 advantage. Sophomore attackman Evan Carbotti (Newport RI, Portsmouth Abbey) posted a goal and an assist in that run. In the second stanza, the Lyons continued to shut down the Engineer attack, limiting them to a single goal while scoring four more of their own for an 8-3 advantage at the half.

In the second half, the Blue and White poured on the offense with seven goals in the third period, including a stretch where Wheaton tallied five straight scores to take a commanding 15-6 lead into the final stanza. Junior Zach Hurd (Bath, ME/Hyde School) spearheaded the Lyon attack in the third, as he accounted for four of the seven goals with three tallies and an assist. MIT did make things interesting in the fourth frame, scoring five consecutive times to trim its deficit to 15-11, but Wheaton put a halt to any successful comeback effort as the Lyons tacked on a pair more to capture the victory.

Ten different Wheaton players partook in the afternoon's scoring, led by Hurd with four goals and one assist. Sophomore attack Zak Putnam (Cape Elizabeth, ME/Cape Elizabeth) contributed a pair of goals with three helpers, while senior Jason Warnick (Montclair, NJ/Hyde School) added a team-best four assists. Weinberg led the way for the Engineers with three goals and four assists, while senior midfielder David Cantor (Newton, MA/Middlesex) added a trio of goals in the loss. Wheaton goalie Mac Jackson (Brooklin, ME/George Stevens) posted an all-around solid performance in net with 22 saves. Christopher Ng (East Meadow, NY/East Meadow) and Justin Raveche (Hoboken, NJ/Delbarton) combined to register 13 saves for MIT.

Wheaton will take to the road in search of its second straight league win Tuesday night, as the Lyons travel to Worcester to face Clark. Game time is slated for a 7:00 p.m. start.
