Wheaton vs. Roger Williams
April 9, 2008
The Game Story:
NORTON, MA- The Wheaton College men's lacrosse team saw a 5-2 lead wiped out during visiting Roger Williams University's seven-goal second period, and the Lyons could not recover while falling, 14-11 on Wednesday in Mirrione Stadium. Wheaton is now 2-7, while the Hawks reached .500 at 5-5.

The visitors scored the first goal of the game after two minutes had expired, but the Lyons produced four of the final five in the period and nabbed a 5-2 lead 51 seconds into the second stanza. Senior Richie Rasamny (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) had two goals by then, while sophomore Tim Horan (Cheshire, CT/Cheshire) contributed three assists. Roger Williams responded with seven straight markers during a 12:08 span, beginning with junior Packy Markham's (Cutchogue, NY/Saint Sebastian's School) tally 19 seconds after Wheaton's fifth marker. Classmate Dave Hurley (Hanover, MA/Hanover) had a hat trick and an assist during the run.

With his team trailing 9-5, Rasamny scored with 11.3 seconds remaining before halftime, and sophomore Drew Schaffer (New Haven, CT/Loomis Chaffee School) tallied 39 ticks after the intermission on a man-up opportunity to cut Wheaton's deficit to 9-7, the first of three instances where the hosts rallied to within two.

The Lyons' quick 2-0 run was met by two straight goals from the Hawks that made it 11-7 before the teams again traded two-goal runs. Markham's fifth marker made it 13-9 with 8:14 remaining in the game, but junior defender Marco Barbone (Newton, MA/Newton North) countered 16 seconds later, and freshman Ben Cederberg (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) scored off a Horan helper with Wheaton a man down and 5:06 left to make the score 13-11. However, Markham scored again at 3:58, and the Hawks salted away the victory when the Lyons received a two-minute penalty with less than two minutes remaining.

Rasamny led Wheaton with four goals on the day, while Barbone had his first two of the season from his spot in the backfield. Horan finished with five assists, the most by a Lyon since May 2006, while freshman Chris Landers (Manchester, MA/Proctor Academy) added a goal and an assist. Sophomore Schuyler Horn (New Hartford, CT/Kingswood-Oxford School) made nine saves.

Markham paced the Hawk offense with six goals and one assist despite not scoring in the first quarter, while Hurley had four markers and two helpers. Senior Slade Patterson (Needham, MA/Proctor Academy) added a pair of tallies, while junior Beaver Barone (Weymouth, MA/Weymouth) scored once and contributed two assists. Senior Bobby Hensley (Simsbury, CT/Simsbury) turned aside 11 shots.

The Lyons remain at home on Saturday, hosting Clark University in a Pilgrim League contest at 1:00 p.m.
