Widener vs. Eastern
April 22, 2009
The Game Story:
Widener gained an early lead and held off Eastern the rest of the way, notching an 8-1 victory at Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium to clinch another berth in the Middle Atlantic Conference Tournament.

The first quarter was a struggle to score until freshman Mark Kane (Morton, PA) tallied with 58 seconds left for a 1-0 Widener lead. Apparently it became contagious as freshman Johnny Casey (Glenside, PA) found the back of the net 10 seconds later for a 2-0 margin.

Senior Justin Upp (Camden, DE) tallied with 7:21 to go in the second and sophomore Cory Malampy (Ridley, PA) followed suit 78 seconds later for a 4-0 margin. The Pride (7-8, 6-3 MAC) led by at least three the rest of the way, cruising to a 43-16 shots edge that included 25-7 in the second half.

Malampy, Casey and sophomore Lee Petroski (Springfield, PA) all scored twice for Widener, which has won five of its last eight games overall and four straight at home. Sophomore Kevin Carney (Ridley, PA) made six saves and freshman Nick Fluharty (West Grove, PA) won 7-of-10 face-offs.

Michael Ryan scored and Zach Rivest made nine saves for the Eagles (6-7, 4-5).

Tonight’s victory assures Widener of playing in the first round of the MAC Tournament on Monday, April 27. Widener sits tied for third place with Elizabethtown in the MAC, but holds the tiebreaker by virtue of a 7-5 road win between the teams on March 14.

The Pride can clinch the number three seed with a victory Saturday at King’s in the regular-season finale. Game time in Wilkes-Barre, PA is 4:00 pm.
