|The Game Story:|
|Widener’s defense played great and the squad battled to the end, but it gave up a goal 1:49 into overtime for a tough 5-4 Middle Atlantic Conference loss to FDU-Florham at Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium.|
The Devils’ plan to slow the game down backfired in the first quarter, when the Pride (5-6, 4-2 MAC) netted three goals for a 3-1 lead. Senior Cory Malampy (Ridley, PA), JJ Hoeffler (Cranford, NJ) and fellow junior Andrew Janusz (Easton, PA) all tallied in that span.
FDU (6-4, 5-1) leveled the contest at three with second-quarter markers from Pat O’Brien and Kevin Shadiack. Sophomore Ryan Shewell (Ellicott City, MD) scored for Widener three minutes into the third quarter, but Mike Sheehan countered for FDU just two minutes later.
The remainder of the contest was a scratch and claw effort in which neither team refused to budge. Widener owned a 9-0 shots edge in the fourth quarter and FDU goalkeeper Alex Kajencki needed to make just two saves, including one on Hoeffler shot’s in the closing seconds.
The Devils’ first shot in overtime came from Shadiack, but freshman goalkeeper Bobby Schluter (Kennett Square, PA) made a great save.
But after a Widener turnover, FDU capitalized on its second shot. Following a time out, Drew Canfield moved from behind the net and scored for the Devils’ fifth straight win and third consecutive in overtime.
Senior Dave Simcox (Ridley, PA) had six ground balls and Schluter made four saves for the Pride, who fell for just the second time in the last six games.
Taylor Evans went 10-of-13 on face-offs and Kajencki amassed eight saves for FDU.
Widener on Saturday visits Misericordia for a 1:00 pm start in Dallas, PA.
