Widener vs. Neumann

The Game Story:
Widener got off to a slow start in the first quarter, but the offense eventually opened up and secured a 13-2 victory over Neumann in both teams season opener at Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium.

Junior Robert Clemens (Aston, PA) scored the first goal of the season for the Pride two minutes into the first period and senior Josh Fox (Wynnewood, PA) followed with a goal of his own at the seven-minute mark. With one minute remaining in the first period, Neumann’s Mark Consolo put the Knights on the board.

In the second period, Widener gave itself a five-goal lift for a 7-2 halftime lead. Freshman Tim Taylor (Philadelphia, PA) scored the first two goals about six minutes apart. Fox scored his second of four goals and freshman Marc La Vine (Nashua, NH) his first of two.

In the second half, Widener scored three goals in each period and junior goalkeeper Mac Nestler (Chatham, NJ) shut down Neumann’s offense. He came up with four saves in the half and closed with seven overall.

The Pride made their mark on face-offs, winning 16-of-19 from with sophomore Trevor Alspach (Willingboro, NJ) winning 14-of-15. The home team, which scored the final 10 goals, owned a decided 45-13 shots edge with senior Ryan Eidenshink (Elkins Park, PA) getting nine and Fox adding eight.

Widener, in its first game as reigning Commonwealth Conference champions, picked up 22 ground balls to Neumann’s seven.

Widener travels to top-ranked Salisbury on Saturday to play at noon.
