| 4/30/07 -- Junior Chris Matthews (Drexel Hill, PA) and sophomore Justin Upp (Camden, DE) each scored twice in the second half, when third-seeded Widener pulled away for a 9-5 victory over Scranton in the first round of the Middle Atlantic Conference Tournament at Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium. Widener (10-5) outscored No. 6 seed Scranton 6-1 in the second half to advance to the MAC semifinals at second-seeded Elizabethtown. The rematch of last year’s semifinal is Thursday at 4:00 pm. Matthews scored 2:54 into the second half off a feed from senior Darnell Jones (Severn, MD) for a 4-4 tie. Upp gave the Pride the lead for good, 5-4, with 10:28 left in the third quarter, tallying off a pass from freshman Cory Malampy (Ridley, PA). Junior Luke Weber (Lititz, PA) found the back of the net with 9:49 remaining in the period, lifting Widener to a 6-4 lead thanks to a pass from senior Gavin Goane (Springfield, PA). The Royals (7-9) moved to 6-5 with 1:53 to go in the quarter when Nick Youngstrom slapped a loose ball in front home. But Widener would not be denied as Matthews, Upp and junior Clint Quedenfeld (Chalfont, PA) all tallied in the fourth quarter. It was the sixth victory in seven games for the two-time defending MAC champions. Junior Brian Stromko (Maplewood, NJ) also scored twice with Goane adding three assists for Widener, which owned a decisive 31-19 shots edge. Senior Andrew Johnson (Wallingford, PA) needed only five saves and Weber won 10-of-16 face-offs. Youngstrom scored twice with Phil Lindner, Thomas Kornobis and Edward Boate each adding a goal for Scranton. Tom Davis finished with nine saves. This was Scranton’s final game as a member of the MAC. It will move to the Landmark Conference next season. |
