Widener vs. Wesley
March 18, 2009
The Game Story:
Freshman Brian Rogers (Malvern, PA) scored 3:27 into overtime to cap a wild finish and give Widener an improbable 9-8 victory over Wesley at Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium.

Widener (2-4) looked in a world of trouble after Wesley outscored it 4-0 combined in the second and third quarters for a 7-4 lead. Justin Thompson tallied with 5:43 to go in the third for the period’s only marker.

The Pride began their charge as junior Cory Malampy (Ridley, PA) scored goals 5 1/2 minutes apart, the latter with 7:53 to go for a 7-6 game. Sophomore Andrew Janusz (Easton, PA) brought the game level with 4:15 to play.

Wesley (5-2) looked for sure it gained the momentum back with 1:00 remaining as Thompson netted his second of the game to make it 8-7. After Malampy’s shot was saved, Wesley’s Kirk Waldie made a costly turnover that Widener sophomore JJ Hoeffler (Cranford, NJ) took and buried into an empty net with 37 seconds left for an 8-8 tie.

The Wolverines had a golden opportunity on their only shot in overtime with Nick Pisacano hitting the post. Widener had four shots in overtime and it looked like it wasted one as senior Justin Upp (Camden, DE) rang the post on the home team’s third try.

But the fourth shot would be the last. Rogers got the ball on the left side with a great look and he buried it past Jim McCleaft for his second goal of the season and first game-winner.

Malampy scored three times with Hoeffler adding two goals and two assists for the Pride, who had a 42-24 shots edge. Freshman Nick Fluharty (West Grove, PA) had eight ground balls and won 13-of-19 face-offs with sophomore Kevin Carney (Ridley, PA), the reigning Middle Atlantic Conference Goalkeeper of the Week, making four saves.

McCleaft did all he could with 13 saves and Waldie totaled nine ground balls for the Wolverines, who had their five-game winning streak snapped.
