Williams vs. Us Merchant Marine
March 19, 2005
The Game Story:
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - U.S. Merchant Marine Academy sophomore attack Sean Dougherty netted four goals Saturday afternoon at Renzie Lamb Field, but it wasn't enough for the Mariners, as host Williams used five goals in the fourth period and five tallies overall from Drew Gottenborg to score an 11-5 victory.

The visiting Mariners (0-2) entered the fourth quarter down 6-5, as back-to-back tallies by Dougherty (Ellicott City, Md.) and Brendan Myers in the third period reduced a three-goal Williams lead to just one.

Dixon Hargrove fired home an unassisted tally with 10:49 left in the game to put the Ephs (1-1) up 7-5, before Chris Merwin made it a three-goal game once again 82 seconds later. Williams scored three more times in the final stanza, including twice in the final three minutes, to account for the final score.

After trailing 1-0 to begin the contest, Dougherty completed a hat trick in the second period to keep the Mariners within striking distance. Senior Matt McCarthy (Germantown, Md.) led all players with two assists on the afternoon.

In the cage, sophomore John Pagano (W. Islip, N.Y.) turned aside 23 shots for USMMA, setting a new career-high in the process. Williams' Rob Hawkins made 19 saves in his first-career victory.

Head coach Tom Gill's Mariners squad will look to pick up its first victory of the season Sunday afternoon (Mar. 20), when they play host to Haverford in USMMA's home opener. Opening face-off at Capt. Tomb Field is scheduled for 1 p.m.
