Wooster vs. Saint Vincent
March 25, 2006
The Game Story:
The College of Wooster put two game-tying attempts on goal during the final minute of Saturdayís game with visiting St. Vincent College, but each shot was saved by Alden Ainsworth as the Bearcats escaped John P. Papp Stadium with a 12-11 victory in menís lacrosse action.

St. Vincent (4-3) scored the first two goals of the fourth quarter to take a 12-10 lead. Then, Wooster (3-3) took advantage of a man-up opportunity for the fourth consecutive time, with Chris Vaccaro scoring on a pass from fellow veteran Shawn Handy at the 8:30 mark. However, that would be the final goal of what had been a high-scoring second half.

At the outset of Saturdayís game, the Fighting Scots were red hot, scoring four times within the first 4:29. The Bearcats, though, went on to keep Wooster off the scoreboard until there was less than a minute to go in the half, and during that same stretch, they had reeled off six unanswered goals.

With St. Vincent leading 6-5 at the break, the two teams would exchange goals throughout the third period, with the Scots tying it 6-6, 7-7, 8-8, 9-9, and 10-10, and then the Bearcats going back ahead each time.

Offensively on the day, Chris Gatsch, Hisham Hassan, Cole Simmons, and Mark Weschler threw in two goals apiece for Wooster. Hassan also contributed two assists for a squad-high four points.

The Scots had trouble containing Bart Costello, who had a seven-point day, including five goals. Also, Evan Chateauneuf tallied a hat trick and Ian Poole, brother of Wooster assistant coach Bryan Poole, notched two goals and one assist in a winning effort.

The key for the Bearcats was Ainsworth, who made 11 saves, including 10 in the second half alone, on the Scotsí 43 shots. St. Vincent had just 29 shots.

Wooster next opens North Coast Athletic Conference play with a home game against Denison University (3-3, 1-0 NCAC) Saturday afternoon.
