Wooster vs. Denison

The Game Story:
The College of Wooster led for the majority of the second half, however, Denison University scored two late goals just 17 seconds apart, first tying the teamsí key North Coast Athletic Conference game 7-7 and then taking an 8-7 lead, which held up as the final score Saturday afternoon in Wooster.

While it was the Fighting Scotsí NCAC opener, Denison took a big step in securing the 2006 conference championship by improving to 3-0 with just two league games remaining.

Trailing 4-3 at halftime, Wooster (3-4, 0-1 NCAC) scored three unanswered goals, including one by freshman sensation Mark Weschler, during the third quarter to take its second two-goal lead of the contest at 6-4. Then, the two squads exchanged goals within the first minute of the fourth, followed by another quick tally by Denisonís Ricky Mackessy, making it a 7-6 game with 13:15 to play.

Both defenses dug in for the next 10 minutes before Teddy Epstein tied the game 8-8 with 2:46 remaining. The Big Red won the ensuing face-off, with Mark Foster collecting the groundball, and moments later, he found Clay Wawner cutting through the middle for the game-winning goal.

Weschler led all scorers with three goals, marking his fourth hat trick of the season, and one assist, which upped his season point total to 26. Also for the Scots, Shawn Handy and Austin Taylor each had one goal and one assist, while Hisham Hassan passed out two assists.

Mackessy and Wawner finished with two goals apiece, and other top contributors to the winning effort were Chris Boehl and Ted Douglass. They each recorded one goal and one assist on the afternoon.

Both goalies performed well, with Alex Baruch (Denison) and Matt Biester (Wooster) posting 10 saves apiece.

The Scots look to snap their four-game losing streak on Wednesday when they welcome Whittier College (4-2) to John P. Papp Stadium at 4:30 p.m.
