The Game Story:
WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster men’s lacrosse team used a seven goal second period to turn its 2-0 lead into a 9-1 cushion, and went on to cruise to a 16-4 win over Birmingham Southern College on Saturday at John P. Papp Stadium.

It wasn’t until midway through the first period that the Scots (2-0) got on the scoreboard, when Joe Suliman connected on an Alex Mies assist that made it 1-0. Then with 59 seconds remaining in the opening stanza, Casey McGann took advantage of a man-up situation to score his first of two goals and give Wooster a 2-0 lead.

Wooster broke the game open in the second, scoring seven goals, with four coming during the period’s initial four minutes. Suliman scored to spark the scoring binge, and Dan MacVarish, Pat Coyne, and Matt Pullara followed with goals of their own to make it 6-0 with 11:11 remaining before the half. Pullara added another score, and Mies chipped in two, with the second coming with two seconds left on the clock, to extend Wooster’s lead to 9-1 at the break.

The Panthers (0-3) got goals from Matt Ivie, who finished with a hat trick, and Cameron Hyde in the second half, but Wooster continued applying offensive pressure, making sure the game stayed out of reach. Pat Coyne scored two goals in the third period, and the first goal of the fourth, giving him a game-high four goals in total to go along with an assist.

Leading the Scots in points was Mies with seven, who continued his blazing start to the season with a hat trick and four assists. Pullara also recorded a three-goal outing, and finished the game a perfect 12-for-12 on face-offs, which helped Wooster dominate possession. As a team, the Scots were 20-of-23 on face-offs and combined to outshoot Birmingham Southern 52-24.

Goalkeeper Corey McGann played deep into the fourth period, and tallied 12 saves, including five in the final stanza.
