The Game Story:
YORK, PA-The York College menís lacrosse team ended their four-game losing skid with an exciting 9-7 Capital Athletic Conference victory over Marymount University on Saturday afternoon at a very cold and windy Kinsley Field. The Spartans improve to 3-6 overall and 2-3 in the league while the Saints fall to 4-9 overall and 2-4 in the league.
The Spartans jumped on the Saints early as Brendan Hopkins (Monrovia, MD/Urbana) opened the scoring with an unassisted goal just 1:08 into the game. The Saints tied the game just over a minute and a half later with a Brandon Nemes unassisted goal.
York then tallied five unanswered goals capped by Kyle Henningerís (Millers, MD/Hereford) man advantage goal with 3:47 remaining in the first. Marymountís DJ Tayman scored the final goal of the period as York led 6-2 after one.
The Saints scored the only two goals of the second period as Kevin Conklin and Alex Curley scored for Marymount.
With light snow flurries starting to fly in the opening moments of the third period, Hopkins began the second half scoring with a goal 1:19 into the second half. Henninger tallied his third goal of the game with 8:28 remaining in the third. Freshman Ryan McNicholas (Fallston, MD/Fallston) then pushed the York lead to 9-4 with an unassisted goal with 5:38 left in the fourth.
The Saints cut the lead to 9-5 with a Curley goal and then struck for a man-down goal by Colin Malone with 52 seconds left in the third, drawing the Saints to within three at 9-6.
The fourth quarter was full of action but limited in scoring as the Saintsí Nick Shay tallied the only goal of the stanza. Marymount had three shots in the final 30 seconds of regulation but Spartan goalie Matt Keeler (Morton, PA/Ridley) turned them away to preserve the win.
Hopkins led the Spartans with four goals while Henninger chipped in with three scores of his own. Paul Rudell (Lusby, MD/Patuxent) handed out three assists while McNicholas added a goal and an assist. Junior captain Chris Chappelle (Stevensville, MD/Chesapeake) tallied one goal and one assist while he also had nine ground balls and won 9-of-15 face offs.
Curley scored twice for the Saints while Tayman, Shay, Nemes, and Malone each scored single goals for Marymount. Wes Huppenthal had two ground balls and won seven of his 10 face offs for the game.
Keeler earned the win as he notched nine saves as he went the distance and allowed the seven Marymount goals. He improves to 3-6 for the campaign. Saint keeper Alex Hammer allowed nine goals and made nine saves for Marymount.
The Spartans finished the game holding a 32-24 edge in shots and a 46-33 margin in ground balls. The teams split their 20 face offs and combined for 52 turnovers for the game. York scored one goal in their four man advantage opportunities while Marymount was 0-for-4. The Saints did tally a man-down goal in the game.
York returns to action on Tuesday as they travel to Goucher to face the Gophers in a make-up contest. Game time in Towson is set for 4:00 pm.
