SPARTAN FIELD-YORK COLLEGE-YORK, PA-The York College men's lacrosse team suffered a tough 16-11 loss to Capital Athletic Conference opponent St. Mary's College on Saturday afternoon at Spartan Field. The loss extends York's losing streak to six while the win is the second straight for St. Mary's.
The first quarter was a tight knit affair as both teams were strong on both ends of the field. Senior standout Scott Hermes (New Freedom, PA/Mervo) got the Spartans (2-8, 1-5 CAC) on the board at 6:54 of the first quarter. His 37th goal of the season tied the score as St. Mary's had found the back of the net first. St. Mary's (3-7, 3-1 CAC) got one back from Andrew Toussaint to regain the lead, but the Spartans answered as Jason Kemper (Bel Air, MD/ Bel Air) drove one home with 5:08 left in the first quarter. With 1:49 left on the clock, St. Mary's got another goal to put them up 3-2 after one quarter of play. Hermes got the scoring started in the second quarter with his second goal of the game. St. Mary's would then shut out the green and white over the next six minutes as the Seahawks netted five straight goals. With :24 seconds left until the half, Mike Gilbert (Columbia, MD/Wilde Lake) drove one past the Seahawks goalie to make the score 8-4 at the half.
York came out to start the second half with a lot of fire looking to climb back in the game. Hermes, Jimmy Mancusi (Norwalk, CT/Brien McMahon), and Brendan Brace (Bethpage, NY/Bethpage) scored the first three goals of the quarter to bring Spartans to within one at 8-7, putting the Spartans right back in the game. The streak was interrupted by a goal from St. Mary's Doug Meyer but the green and white got that one right back from senior Ryan Wynne (Mt. Airy, MD/South Carroll) scored to make it 9-8. St. Mary's got the last goal of the period from Wayne Hickok as they led 10-8 after three quarters of play.
Hickok got his second goal of the game to start the fourth quarter. That goal started a quarter dominated by the Seahawks as they outscored the Spartans 6-3. York's three goals came off the sticks of Mancusi and two from Hermes. St. Mary's dominating presence in the fourth allowed them to hold on for the 16-11 victory. York was led by Hermes with five goals while Ryan Wynne added four points on three assists and one goal. Mancusi had two late goals to go along with his assist, and Kemper had a goal and an assist.
St. Mary's was led by Toussaint with four goals and two assists. Greg Scagliotti contributed four points on a goal and three assists. Terry Hagerty had three goals while Ryan McCauley notched two goals and an assist. Mike Watkins made 13 saves in 56 minutes in net for the Seahawks while Evan Mazzocchi (Swarthmore, PA/Strath Haven) notched nine saves in the loss. The Spartans, now 2-8 and 1-5 in the CAC, return to action on Wednesday when they host DeSales University. Game time in York is set for 4:00 pm.
