Mount Ida came back with a vengeance scoring the game’s next six goals, including three by Matt Savage (Peabody, MA/Peabody). Another answer from the hosts with 5:10 left on the second quarter clock pulled the Lions to within 7-4, but Savage’s fourth goal and an unassisted tally by Paul Battipaglia (Clinton, CT/Morgan) with only 13 seconds remaining in the second period put the Mustangs firmly back in control.
Savage netted his fifth goal of the game only 15 seconds into the third period and started another Mustang six goal streak. The Lions would answer with man-up goals, but Mount Ida scored four of the game’s final six goals.
The Mustangs out shot Emerson 48-33 and had a 45-23 edge in ground balls. Emerson goalie Dean Smollar had 22 saves, while the Mustangs’ Matt Vernik (Bethany, CT/Amity) picked up 14.
