The Game Story:
COLLEGEVILLE, PA -- Attackman Steve Welsh (Sr., Lewes, DE/Cape Henelopen) netted an unassisted man-up goal with 5:57 left on the game clock and dished out three assists to lead the Franklin & Marshall College men’s lacrosse team to a 9-7 win at Ursinus College in Centennial Conference action.

Welsh’s game-winner broke a 7-7 tie between the Bears and Diplomats as the win improves F&M to 4-0 all-time against Ursinus.

Historically, Welsh’s performance raises his career totals to 72 goals and 86 assists for 158 points as he surpassed Jeb Barrows ’88 (84) for fifth in career assists at the College and moved to within four points of eclipsing Richard Dolan ’82 (161) for seventh in points at the College.

The key to the game for F&M was the play of face-off specialist Matt Capone (Sr., Scarsdale, NY/Scarsdale), who won 14-of-18 face-offs, and the F&M defense that was successful on 16-of-17 clears in the game.

Tied 4-4 at halftime, the Diplomats turned up the pressure out-shooting the Bears 21-3 in the third period to take a 7-5 lead entering the fourth.

Overall, F&M broke the tie at 12:17 of the third period as Kevin Kohl (So., Manasquan, NJ/Loomis Chaffee) buried an unassisted goal before Ursinus’ Matt Davis found the back of the net at 6:09 to retie the score.

However, Franklin & Marshall finished off the period with a pair of scores as Sean Duffy (Jr., Springfield, PA/Archmere Academy) split the Bears’ defense for an unassisted goal at 4:10 before Bobby Atkins (Fr., Concord. MA/Loomis Chaffee) finished a feed from Welsh with 31 seconds left in the period for a 7-5 lead.

The Bears' Mike Stein made the game interesting to start the fourth period he scored at 13:50 and 7:13 off assists from Anthony Tori and Dane Mangin, respectively, to knot the game at 7-7.

Welsh then cashed in on a man-up chance following a pushing penalty by Ursinus’ Eric Hoffman as he blasted a shot past Bears’ goalie Matt Orlando with 5:57 remaining. The goal kept the Diplomats’ on man-up as Welsh and TJ Mann were both called for unnecessary roughness before Ursinus’ Dane Mangin was called for tripping at 5:41.

The Diplomats’ J.B. Robichau (Sr., Edgartown, MA/Tabor) finished the game’s scoring with 5:26 left as he ripped an unassisted shot into the twine for the 9-7 final.

F&M, which never trailed in the game, opened the scoring with 9:58 left in the first period as Henry Kusjanovic (Jr., Armonk, NY/Byram Hills) scored before Ursinus’ Anthony Tori netted a goal at 9:39 to tie the game at 1-1.

The teams then traded goals as Cyrus Adams (So., Nashville, TN/Montgomery Bell) scored off an assist from Welsh at 6:38 before Tori netted a score off an assist from Nick Shriver. The Diplomats retook the lead in the closing minutes of the period as Adams scored off another Welsh assist at 1:55 for a 3-2 lead after 15 minutes of play.

However, Ursinus responded as Justin Reinke and Stein scored at 4:00 and 2:36 of the second period, respectively, and Adams scored off an assist from Kusjanovic at 2:58 for a 4-4 tie at halftime.

Overall, F&M out shot Ursinus 51-19 in the game, including a 30-8 margin in the second half, and held a 49-21 advantage in ground balls as the Diplomats dominated the game statistically from opening whistle to closing horn.

In goal, Mike Sartorius (Sr., Summit, NJ/Summit) recorded eight saves in 60 minutes, while Orlando stopped 25 of F&M’s shots.

Franklin & Marshall (5-1, 1-0 Centennial Conference) will continue the Centennial Conference season on April 2 at home versus Haverford College. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m.
