|The Game Story:|
|COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Ursinus College closed to within two goals early in the second half against Gettysburg College, but the eighth-ranked Bullets held strong down the stretch and scored five of the final six goals to secure their seventh-straight victory 12-6 on Saturday, April 11. Senior Zach Pucci (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) and sophomore Andrew Ryan (Palm Beach, Fla./Westminster School (Conn.)) each posted hat tricks for Gettysburg (9-3, 5-1 CC), while junior Joe Brody (Bethesda, Md./Walter Johnson) tossed in career goal No. 100.|
Sitting on 99 goals heading into the contest, Brody wasted little time to reach the century mark with the game’s first goal 1:10 into the first quarter, becoming just the 13th player in the Bullets’ rich history to reach the mark. Gettysburg added two more goals by sophomore Danno Lynch (Medfield, Mass./Avon Old Farms (Conn.)) and Ryan before Ursinus got on the board. Pucci made it a 4-1 Gettysburg advantage at the end of the first period with a goal right before the horn.
The visitors tacked on the first two goals of the second quarter to take a 6-1 lead with 6:08 before the half. Ursinus (3-8, 1-5 CC) began its comeback before the break with back-to-back goals by Eric Farris, and following a goal by Lynch which made it 7-3 at the half, the Bears tallied the first two goals of the third period to pull to 7-5.
Gettysburg’s relentless offensive attack, which poured in 45 shots in the contest, found a groove midway through the third quarter and into the fourth. Senior Tom O’Donnell (Montgomeryville, Pa./La Salle College) started a four-goal run with a man-down goal at 7:23, just 28 seconds after the Bears’ last score. Ryan added an even goal to start the fourth, before Pucci lit the lamp twice to put the Bullets up 11-5 with under six minutes remaining.
Ursinus broke the run with a goal at the one-minute mark and O’Donnell capped the day with Gettysburg’s fourth period-ending goal.
The Bullets out-shot the Bears 45-26 in the contest and committed 10 less turnovers (12-22).
Pucci posted two or more goals for the fourth consecutive game, while Ryan picked up his second hat trick of the spring. O’Donnell finished with two goals and two assists and Brody added two helpers to his score. Junior Kyle McGrath (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) posted a career-high four caused turnovers and tied a personal mark with five ground balls.
Senior goalie Zach Furshman (Miami, Fla./Kent School (Conn.)) turned in one of the his best performances in the cage this season, stopping a dozen shots and jumping out for a career-high nine ground balls.
Eric Farris put in half of Ursinus’ goals. Ernie Constantine tallied two caused turnovers and four ground balls, while goalie Tony Aquilino made 14 saves and scooped up eight ground balls.
Gettysburg takes a break from its conference schedule to play Messiah College at Shirk Field at Mussleman Stadium on Wednesday, April 15, at 4:00 p.m.
