|The Game Story:|
|Hoffman scores game winner to lead McDaniel past Ursinus, 11-10|
COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Steve Hoffman scored a game-high five goals, including the game winner to lead McDaniel over Ursinus 11-10 in Centennial Conference (CC) men’s lacrosse action on Saturday.
Hoffman netted the game-winning goal with 21 seconds left in the game to help the Green Terror (5-7, 2-4 CC) snap a two-game losing skid and post their third straight win over the Bears (2-9, 0-6 CC).
Dane Mangin (Willow Grove, PA/Archbishop Wood) led Ursinus with six points, scoring three goals and dishing out three assists. Matt Orlando (Morton, PA/Springfield) made 13 saves and tallied seven ground balls.
McDaniel took the early 3-0 lead on back-to-back goals by Matthew Buschman and an extra-man opportunity by Hoffman in the first nine minutes of the game. Mangin stopped the Green Terror spurt with his first goal at the 5:06 mark, before Curtis Schaeffer gave McDaniel a 4-1 lead going into the second quarter.
Mangin struck again, sandwiched between two Green Terror goals from Kolyn Kirby and Hoffman to make it 6-2 in favor of the visitors.
James Lawson (Wellesley, MA/Vermont Academy) took advantage of a McDaniel slashing penalty and scored on a pass from Mangin to end the second quarter at 6-3.
Each team netted three goals apiece in the third quarter, starting with Carlo Fusco (Watervliet, NY/Shaker) thanks to a Mike Stein (Springfield, PA/Springfield) assist. Hoffman and Matt Keating exchanged goals, before Stein made it 8-5.
Hoffman tallied his second extra-man goal with 4:27 remaining in the third to help the Green Terror regain a four-goal lead.
Seth Bakes (Barto, PA/Boyertown) netted the last goal of the third that sparked a 3-0 run by the Bears to get within one at 9-8.
Anthony Tori (Springfield, PA/Springfield) and Nick Shriver (Braintree, VT/Randolph-Union) scored the first two goals of the second half just 32 seconds apart, but Ursinus could never grab the lead.
Brad Baer recorded an unassisted tally to push the lead to 10-8. After eight minutes of scoreless play, Magnin tallied his third goal to keep it close at 10-9. The Bears fired off three straight shots and had a chance to tie the game on a man-up opportunity, but came up empty. McDaniel made the clear attempt and took the timeout, before Hoffman scored the game winner with 21 seconds left in regulation.
Ursinus was quick to respond and Tori netted a goal 11 seconds later for the final margin.
Schaeffer collected a game-high nine ground balls, while Chad Schell posted 10 saves in the win.
The Bears return to action on Wednesday at Muhlenberg. Game time is 7 p.m.
